dimland radio 8-12-23 show notes

Well, we’ve moved in. It’s been a week. Dad’s TV is pretty loud, but, surprisingly, closing the door to our new TV room does block out most of the noise. So, it hasn’t been much of a problem. I also think Dad has turned the volume down a little to not be too intrusive.

I mentioned his troubles with his TV remote and that someone ought to design a remote for seniors with just the buttons they need. Well, someone has…

Available on Amazon.

There will be challenges. He wants the key back for his car. His kids aren’t very comfortable with the idea. (More on the car situation next week.) He also isn’t too thrilled with having someone come in three days a week to do some light cleaning, laundry, make lunch, and keep him company. We tell him the person helps us as much as they help him.

As I said last week: We’ll make it work. Somehow.

Another reason to hate this show, besides all the bleeping, is that the shop-owners appear to forcibly kick out half of their customers.

Dad watches the bleeping horrible Hardcore Pawn, which I learned that bleep is no longer being produced (thank bleeping Satan), but the bleep is being rerun on some bleeping free broadcast TV channel. (Dad ain’t gonna bleeping pay for TV!)

I haven’t seen much of it, but I bleeping hate what little of it I have seen. Especially all the bleeping bleeps!

This meme assumes facts not in evidence.

Here we go again. This time Congress took time out of its busy schedule to listen to a bunch of second-hand and third-hand anecdotes about the US government having crashed alien spacecraft parts and “non-human biologics” in its possession.

I do not doubt the “whistleblowers” are sincere in their claims, but the hearings produced, as Steve Novella, host of the Skeptic’s Guide to the Universe podcast, would call it, a big nothing burger.

“Whistleblower” and provider of no evidence David Grusch.

Sigh.

Sinead O’Connor was only 56.
Paul Reubens (Pee Wee Herman) also gone too soon at 70.

Although it may be impolite and unkind to want someone dead, I can think of a number of people I wouldn’t even shrug a shoulder should they die. A certain dictator who started a war in Eastern Europe comes to mind. As does a certain dictator wannabe who admires that nation invader.

But Sinead and Pee Wee?! What the hell?!

There is an awesome impromptu tribute to Sinead by fellow Irish singer/songwriter Damien Rice caught on video on the YouTube. It’s very touching. And I mentioned a supercut video of every Pee Wee Herman appearance on David Letterman’s show. You ought to check them both out.

They are fitting tributes to two artists who left the world way too soon.

A very old book of nonsense written by men who didn’t know kangaroos existed.

I went to to church again. Not today, Jesus! And the priest read a parable told by Jesus and commented on the story in his homily. The parable had to do with a farmer finding out from his SLAVES that there were weeds in with the crop of wheat.

I’m sorry. Did you say slaves? SLAVES?!

Jesus Christ! This religion stuff just don’t make sense!

Amy and I took some time away from all the business we’ve gotta ourselves into to see a band we rather like play live at the Minneapolis Armory. The band is The National and opening for them was the pretty darn good The Beths.

I knew nothing by The Beths, but I thought their tunes were very catchy (such as this one) and I’ll be checking them out on Spotify.

And I only knew five of the songs The National played. I have fallen behind on their more recent material, but I am rectifying that. There were two songs I had hopes for. Bloodbuzz, Ohio, which I hoped they would play, and About Today, which I hoped they wouldn’t.

The first is my favorite of their songs. The second, which I also like, just kills me whenever I hear it. It makes me feel emotional and I didn’t want to cry in public, and I knew I would have if they played it.

Did they comply with my hopes? You gotta listen to the show.

Dad Is Still Home

The old fellow is about to get three new housemates. My wife Amy, our dog Edna, and me!

It’s going to be a challenge. I mean, where are we going to put all our stuff?!

We’ll make it work. Somehow.

A Dimland Radio Pedantic Moment: His Mom Called Him!

Cut him some slack, lady! Mom won’t be around forever!

The Jake From State Farm ad campaign has one ad in which a couple (married, I’m guessing) standing outside Jake’s house to ask him some vital question. The wife snarks about her husband having to always call his mother about everything.

Oh, this Pedantic Moment covered a bit more than the mom calling thing, but the husband does talk to his mom.

But his mom called him! And stop shaming your husband for talking to his mom!

A Dimland Radio ARGH!

I didn’t watch the MLB All-Star Game this year. I just watched the highlights the next day.

Here they were talking to two players while they were playing. ARGH!

It used to be that I would really try to catch as much of the game as I could back when I was cleaning buildings every Tuesday night, but Fox Sports decided talking to the players while they play would be a great way to get me to stop watching the big game.

They were right.

A Cool Thing: Elly De La Cruz Steals 2nd, 3rd, AND HOME!

He stole home!

Speaking of baseball, in a recent game between the Cincinnati Reds and the Pittsburgh Pirates, Reds player Elly De La Cruz stole two bases and home all in less than two minutes!

So awesomely cool!

This Is Also Pretty Cool

The de-aged Alicia Silverstone reprising her star-making role in Clueless for an ad for the shopping app Rakuten (not a sponsor of Dimland Radio) is very impressive. The ad is fun and the de-aging is impressive with only one moment when her actual age (which isn’t that old!) glimpses through.

Just a hint of her actual age (46).

A Dimland Radio Pedantic Moment Revisited

You got toothpaste in my orange juice!” “You got orange juice on my toothpaste!”

Last week, I railed against television and movie depictions of people brushing their teeth BEFORE they eat breakfast, thinking no one would object to my rant.

Not so fast sparkinator!

One of my skeptic friends provided information that showed that science is suggesting brushing your teeth before breakfast is a good idea. This article, linked to me by my friend, provides information pulled from one study (one very, very, very small) demonstrating that brushing stimulates saliva production. Saliva helps protect tooth enamel from harmful bacteria.

The article does recommend that, if you don’t want to ruin the taste of your morning OJ, you should then wait at least 30 minutes after eating to brush.

I’ll do that.

Dad Is Home

It’s been three days now. Dad is home. My sister is staying with him until other arrangements are made. (More on that in the future.)

He’s happy to be back in his house and we intend to do what we can to keep him there as long as possible.

The Finger Issue

Some readers were very upset.

I thought it was a parody of the world famous magazine of satire and parody. But, no, that is an actual cover of Mad Magazine!

I had no idea it existed.

That Ain’t Traci Lords!

Elvira, Pee Wee Herman, and ?

Mom! The internet is wrong again!

On my Facebook page, a friend had shared this image and I asked if that was Laraine Newman copping a feel in the group (or should I say grope?) photo. They told me it was Traci Lords.

That ain’t Traci Lords. That’s Laraine Newman. Don’t doubt my super-recognizer powers. Laraine was a member of the improv troupe The Groundlings, as were Paul Reubens (Pee Wee Herman) and Cassandra Peterson (Elvira). Traci was never a Groundling.

Here’s another shot of Laraine sporting the exact same look.

Laraine Newman

I’m right and the internet is wrong.

Parabreakdown And AI-Generated Images

Parabreakdown is a YouTube channel that does quick looks at claims of believers in the paranormal. He looks at all kinds of questionable evidence, including that offered for the existence of Bigfoot.

It’s a good channel that is worth a look.

It looks pretty good, but it’s a fake.

A recent video looks into some old photographs alleged to be from the early days of photography showing Bigfoot like creatures posing with people. Just hangin’ out together. No big deal.

AI Could Cause Some Problems

I get more into it on the show (so listen to it!) than I will here, but Artificial Intelligence is beginning to create images of events that didn’t happen and the images are getting more realistic. In fact, recent AI photos of a certain politician who refused to accept they had lost an election, so they incited their followers into attempting a coup, which thankfully didn’t work, had fooled some people into thinking the arrest photos of that politician were real.

Oh, if only this was real.

I speculated as to what might be possible with AI. Good and bad.

Have a listen.

A Dimland Radio Pedantic Moment: Black Mirror And Oral Hygiene

“I love how my toothpaste ruins the taste of orange juice!”

The new season of the Netfilx series Black Mirror‘s first episode is called Joan Is Awful.

And she is awful! I mean, she brushes her teeth BEFORE she has breakfast! Who does that?!

MLB’s 24th Perfect Game

Yes, it was the Hated Yankees. It’s still cool.

27 up, 27 down!

It’s only happened 24 times in MLB history. Although, it should be 25. In 2010, an ump blew the call on what would have been the 27th out, so Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga missed out on history.

This past week, Hated Yankee Domingo German threw the historic 24th perfect game. Quite an achievement. However, in addition to his being a Hated Yankee, plenty on social media believe he isn’t worthy of praise due to past domestic violence incidences.

I think we can still celebrate the achievement, if not the achiever.

This brings up…

The Artist Versus The Art

Was Bowie an asshole? Well, there was that underage groupie…

I talked about artists with questionable, sometimes criminal, behavior. Should we abandon the art, when the artist turns about to be an asshole?

I’ll leave that up to the individual to decide.

Pete’s not an asshole. Well, he might be, but he was cleared of all charges related to child pornography.

OceanGate Demonstrates The Need For Regulation

They were warned.

I understand the desire to laugh at hubris-tic rich people dying doing something stupidly risky, but people did die.

Politics Girl does a good job explaining how this tragedy shows the importance of regulations, of government oversight and safety standard setting.

Context! Remember To Include Proper Context

Those Moms won;t be intimidated by hate groups. They’re the hate group and they’ll do the intimidating, thank you very much.

Moms For Liberty (for rich, white, straight, Christian cis males) forgot the importance of context when they included a quote by Adolf Hitler. There was no explaining why his quote was posted just under the headline banner of their newsletter. They later claimed it was a warning to parents to not let the guv-ment turn our kids woke, apologized for any offense given, and took down the dog whistle.

Well, maybe it wasn’t a dog whistle. I mean, it is pretty blatant.

And Then There’s This Asshole

Lock him up! Lock him up! Lock him up!

I’ll let Lawrence O’Donnell lay this one on you.

MAGA! Your emperor has no clothes!

Hail Santa!

Guess the issue number of this comic book.

I explained the sorts of stories included and the numbering system of Dell Publishing’s long-running comic book series called Four Color.

There’s an issue that features Santa Claus Funnies. The issue number is a curious occurrence, especially if you what Santa is an anagram for…

I’m pointing at the interesting number.

Was This The First Album I Bought?!

Yes, but is it punk?

I was asked on a friend’s podcast (more on that when the show drops) what was the first album I bought. Honestly, I’m not sure. It might be the 1980 novelty classic Chipmunk Punk by Alvin and the Chipmunks.

Not the must sophisticated music listener in those days, but I was just beginning to learn. I was still a couple of years away from seeing The Who in concert for the first time, so don’t be too harsh on me.

But was Chipmunk Punk even punk? You tell me.

This Guy Died

What?! He supported Fearless Loser?! NO!

This Picture Has A Point

The nipples bad from good to good on one and good to bad on the other. They’re the same nipples!

It’s Pride Month and the two trans people in the photo demonstrated the weirdness America has about women’s breast by going topless on the White House lawn during a Pride event. Although, I’m not sure that was their intent.

The woman in the photo is Rose Montoya. She’s an activist who got caught up in the moment and show herself off. The White House banned her. She has apologized for her actions.

It’s Not True: Open Says Me

Hey! Why not Google it?

My wife asked if the statement above is true.

It’s not.

Although, the origin of “open sesame” phrase isn’t clear (there are a couple theories), we can point right to where “open says me” comes from. A Popeye cartoon from 1937.

If you watch the cartoon, be warned, it’s from 1937 and it gets a little cringy in its depiction of Arabs.

Red Dawn Is A Ludicrous Movie

It’s really, really stupid! It’s Red Dawn (1984) starring Patrick Swayze and several other young (at the time) actors.

I had my doubts that it could be any good. And I was right.

This movie was a mess. Poorly act and very badly edited, and completely unbelievable.

I say don’t bother. It’s dumb.

Roger Might Cringe Today

She thought she was having sex with her boyfriend. She didn’t give the nerd consent.

In the same episode of Siskel & Ebert At The Movies, in which they review the dopey Red Dawn (Gene Siskel kinda liked it!), they review Revenge Of The Nerds. Roger Ebert (who rightly hated Red Dawn) mentions his favorite part was the nerd getting the hot blonde. Looking back on the scene where the nerd wins the blonde’s heart appears awfully rapey today.
