Two More

On last week’s show, I mentioned personally knowing five people who have tested positive for the Covid. I don’t know anyone who has died due to the pandemic, for which I am glad.

Well, I can add two more people to the list. My wife’s brother and his wife both have the dreaded disease. He ended up in the hospital.

Fortunately, he is now home. He has some recovery time ahead of him, but he’s alive.

Cool Thing #1: My Wife And My Friend And The Covid Vaccine

Minutes apart from each other, both my wife and my friend contacted me to let me know they had set up their first dose of the vaccine. They had both received an email from our insurance company (my friend has the same insurance company as my wife and I) inviting them to make the appointment. They both told me to check my email…

Sure, I may be older than both of them and work outside the home, but they get the invite and I don’t. My friend works at home. My wife is between jobs.

I see how I rate.

Actually, I am very pleased and excited. This means the circle is expanding and my turn will come soon. Jesus! It better.

Cool Thing #2: The Sound Of Mars

In February (I’m a little behind), NASA released the first ever audio recording of the sound of another planet! A sound that is at the same time both familiar and exotic.

It’s the sound of wind.

The Story Of The 1919 Chicago “Black Sox” Scandal

The baseball season is just days away and I’m pretty excited about it. I thought I would tell the story of the 1919 World Series, in which eight players of the heavily-favored Chicago White Sox were accused of throwing the Series and losing on purpose to the Cincinnati Reds, to celebrate the return of the greatest game ever.

The information I related came mostly from Ken Burn’s Baseball, but there were a couple other sources. One of which has adjusted the story that has always been told, breaking a couple myths of the scandal. Oh, the fellows definitely cheated, but the motivation was more nuanced.

I also realized something I hadn’t noticed on previous viewings of Ken Burns’ documentary. Two of the “talking head” contributors attempted to excuse or at least soften the cheating of those “dumb farm boys.” I called bullshit on that. They cheated. They may have been naive in thinking they wouldn’t get caught, or, if they did, they wouldn’t get more than a slap on the wrist, or that the gamblers would play square, but they knew what they were doing.

A Dimland Radio Pedantic Moment: Prisoners (2013)

A pretty good movie about two families whose youngest daughters go missing and one of the fathers (Hugh Jackman) goes a little too far in taking the law into his own hands. It’s a dark movie with good performances all around. It asks interesting questions about how far a parent would be willing to go to save their child.

It’s very much worth watching, but there is a scene near the climax of the film in which the main police detective (Jake Gyllenhaal) on the case needs to get somewhere in a hurry. He races along winding country roads, in the rain. He gets to a more urban area with more lanes and more traffic. He was driving his unmarked police car as he weaves in and out of traffic, nearly hitting several cars.

My pedantry briefly took me out of the movie because of something he didn’t do.

Be patient. Wash your hands. Stay home. Stay safe. WEAR A MASK!
