Pedantic Moment: Pres. Trump A Nowhere Man?

Do those lyrics seem off to you? They do? That’s because the person who put this image together had to make a change in order for this to be insulting toward the President. There are a couple lines that have been changed, but the one that had to be changed for sure was, “Isn’t he a bit like you and me?”

What?! Oh, no. This is supposed to insult him, not suggest he would have anything in common with us.

It Was The Short Change Scam

While in line at the register at the grocery store, a fellow in front of me pulled off the Short Change Scam on the young, inexperienced cashier. I wasn’t paying attention as the scam began, but I did eventually see something was up. I wasn’t able to stop it and I’m not sure how I would, but I did speak up for the kid with his manager.

You can learn about the Short Change Scam here.

A Cool Coincidence

I believe in coincidences. I don’t think the universe is trying to tell me something when I think of a particular TV show theme song (Lost In Space) and, a couple days later, a friend asks if I can identify that same theme song. If the universe is trying to tell me something having to do with that theme, I have no idea what it could be.

It’s Not True: KFC Can’t Say “Chicken”

Hard to read, I know. Sorry. Best image I could find.
There’s an odd conspiracy theory that been going around the internets every since Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants started calling themselves KFC in 1991. I spotted the meme above detailing the “real” reasons for the name change. KFC doesn’t use chickens. No, they use “genetically manipulated organisms” (it was early on, so the meme maker probably hadn’t heard the term genetically modified organisms yet), which the government says can’t be called chicken.

For crying out loud. It’s not true. On the KFC website the word “chicken” is used multiple times. And the original name is still at the top of every page.

Crisis Actors

Answer: No, it’s not.
It’s one of the newer conspiracy theories. The crisis actor. People who “they” send in to fake or over-dramatize major events, such as mass shootings. It’s ridiculous and disrespectful and needlessly cruel to those whose lives have been ended or touched be these tragedies.

Skeptic Bob Blaskiewicz gives a good overview of the crisis actor conspiracy here.

Top Three Cool Things Of The Week

Here’s Three Cool Things from this week.

3) True, the stamp on the container is not giving an expiration date, but I still think it’s cool that someone had a little fun with this 250 million year old sea salt.

2) I spotted this live concert video of Cheap Trick from 1977. It’s nearly 22 minutes of some damn cool rock.

1) This will undoubtedly just be cool to me, but I’ve been encouraging old art school friends to post pictures from back in the day on Facebook. A few have shown up. Very cool!

I Got Fooled Again

I was determined to not get fooled again, but I’m human. The Superbowl halftime show used a bit of computer trickeration in making downtown Minneapolis turn purple. I naively thought it actually happened. Well, it didn’t.

A Bit Of A Dumb Thing To Do

Is this a hoax? I think it probably is.
I posted the above image with a joke about the men of the time the image was taken were probably all that upset these women might be unavailable. It was joke based on the perceived unattractiveness of the women in the photo. Their value and the value of their cause must not be so great because they aren’t pretty.

My wife got after me because of my joke, as did a few other people I know on Facebook. I wasn’t stubborn. I didn’t try to justify the joke. I realized it was in poor taste and I edited the post the reflect my understanding of my insensitivity.

A discussion in the comment thread was launched. There were differing opinions, but, for the most part, the discussion was civil.

It was also pointed out that the image might be a spoof, meant to belittle the women of the temperance movement and illicit the kind reaction that led me to make that joke.

PETA, Honey, And Red Paint On Fur Coat

While I talked about the stern women image being a spoof, I mentioned PETA and their “Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” campaign. PETA uses honey rather than vinegar to attract flies. They don’t use women attempting to look stern and severe. They use attractive models and actors.

I reminisced about the 90s when animal rights people would throw red paint on rich people’s fur coats. It was a counter-production action. It was vinegar, not honey. So, people wouldn’t likely be drawn to their cause. And rich folks would just buy a new fur coat.

Movie Recommendation & A Pedantic Moment: Logan’s Run (1976) And Gratuitous Nudity

It was the big sci-fi film for about a year until Star Wars was released. The story is intriguing as it focuses on a future that is ruled by pure pleasure. No worries of want or needs. No work. All pleasure. The catch? You aren’t allowed to live past 30.

Some people don’t accept that end and become runners who seek Sanctuary. Then the Sandmen get involved. Sandmen are the cops (and pretty much the only job there is) who hunt down the runners.

Michael York plays a Sandman who is tasked to find Sanctuary. Jenny Agutter plays a woman who is involved in the secret organization who helps runners escape.

The special effects were given an Academy Award then, but they don’t hold up as well as Star Wars.

The Pedantic Moment? Well, it has to do with the gratuitous nudity. York and Agutter get wet and then very cold. There are animal skins available, but first get those wet clothes off!
Top Three Cool Things Of The Week

Here’s Three Cool Things from this week.

3) The Walt Simonson who sent that letter to Marvel Comics is the Walt Simonson who later work for Marvel as an artist.

The two images are the same image.
2) A way cool optical illusion (see above) made its way around the internets. Go here for an explanation.

1) It seems a few people disagree with me, but I think Pres. Obama’s portrait revealed this week is pretty cool.

There Was A Superbowl

And, as usual, it didn’t involve the Minnesota Vikings. Sigh.

But there was a game and it was very entertaining. And the right team won. Sure, their fan base may have a higher percentage of assholes than most other fan bases, but let’s not hold that against the team. Philadelphians now know something Minnesotans will never know:

What it’s like to have a Superbowl champion team.

A Few Observations About The Halftime Show

Jason Timberlodge was OK. He lip-synced well, despite the audio problems for the first half of the performance. He strutted well and had a few good dance moves. His tribute to Prince and Minneapolis lighting up purple was a nice touch.

And there was no wardrobe malfunction. Unless you count the droopy drawers he wore.

Speaking Of Wardrobe Malfunctions

And I did speak of the infamous wardrobe malfunction. I connected it to Pres. Trump calling some African nations shitholes. I was trying to demonstrate how people on either side of the political/social spectrum react to controversies and how they tend to dismiss the other side’s reaction.

During this segment I mentioned the funny supercut video of CNN folks saying “shithole.” I find it absurdly humorous.

Pedantic Moments:  Fargo Series And A Pro Choice Post On Facebook

I did two this week, because I wanted to.

First up was from the television series Fargo season three. Early in that season’s first episode there’s a scene in a Mom & Pop grocery store. Behind the checkout counter can be seen several bottles of liquor for sale. Oh, gosh, no. Not in Minnie-sOH-ta. Doncha know.

The other had to do with this image posted to Facebook:

 Oh, boy. Abortion. Yikes.

Yep, I went into that topic. Well, not deeply. I talked a bit on each of the arguments for abortion with my pedantry focusing on #5. Everything? Think about it.

Top Three Cool Things Of The Week

Here’s Three Cool Things from this week.

3) I got to hang out with an old friend I haven’t seen in a year.

2) The drones display during the opening ceremony for this year’s Winter Olympics. Way cool.

1) What else would be number one? SpaceX Falcon Heavy! SCIENCE!! YEAH!!!

Movie Recommendation: The Hammer (2007)

Adam Carolla stars and co-wrote this very funny and surprisingly romantic film about a 40 something underachiever getting a chance in the boxing world. It’s funny and very entertaining with a cameo appearance by Jane Lynch. You can’t go wrong with Jane Lynch.

Tales Of Art School

Every now and again I go full self-indulgent and wax on about some topic or topics that might just be interesting to me. I may have done that the first half of this show.

I got to thinking about my art school days. I talk about a very bad teacher and my desktop doodling. The tales involve German Expressionist Otto Dix and freedom of expression. And there’s a bit of how context informs content.

A Dimland Radio ARGH!

According to the internets, I’m not the only one who lets out an “argh!” when seeing a certain ad for Apple’s iPad Pro. The ad follows a 14 year old girl as she spends her day on her iPad Pro. She chats with friends, writes a blog, makes art, etc. At the end, she’s laying on the grass in her back yard and typing away on her tablet.

A nice neighbor lady comes out and asks, “What are you doing on your computer?”

That’s when it happens.

“What’s a computer?” is how the little shit responds!

ARRRRRRRRRGGGHHHHHH!!!!

10 Things A Facebook Friend Thinks Are True

A Facebook friend (more like acquaintance) had posted 10 things he claimed to know were true. The ten things reflected his skeptical nature and his atheism. I thought I’d give my impressions on what he “knows” is true.

I agreed with much of what he stated, but I did express a certain agnosticism on a few items.

I mentioned an InFact video on two simple proofs humans are causing global warming. Here’s the link to it.

Top Three Cool Things Of The Week

Here’s Three Cool Things from this week.

3) Sometimes, at the comic book store, we get a customer who is just so sincerely excited to be getting a particular comic, that we can’t help but feel good about it. It was his first purchase of an early issue of Amazing Spider-Man drawn by his favorite artist: Steve Ditko.

2) The issue that customer bought had a really good cover. I noted to myself to remember it for my monthly examination of great covers in my blog for the store. I mentioned the blog to the customer and he let me know that he reads it! His enthusiasm was so heartening, I told him I would write about that cover for February’s great cover installment.

1) I have an art commission! A friend asked me to draw Marvel’s swamp creature, Man-Thing. He’s leaving the design to my discretion and he’ll pay me for it!

Movie Recommendation: Singin’ In The Rain (1952)

Yep. A musical. Normally, I’m not much of a fan of musicals, but a friend encouraged me to watch this one. I liked it. The song and dance numbers didn’t slow the story down, which is one of my problems with most other musicals.

I talked about the skill level of the performers, the directors (the star Gene Kelly also co-directed the movie), and the crew needed to pull off those elaborate production numbers. Very impressive.

Sports! Yes, Again.

Concerning the Minnesota Vikings latest appearance in the NFC Championship game, how about I keep it simple and sum it up with an often used phrase in the Fitzsimons family? OK? Here goes:

Well, at least they won’t lose the Superbowl.

Sigh.

Salt For The Wound

As if the Vikings being the Vikings wasn’t bad enough, Mother Nature decided that after such a humiliating defeat the Twin Cities might really enjoy have about a foot of snow dropped on them.

It was so much fun having to have to remove snow at home, at my parent’s, and at work over the course of three days.

Why do we live here?

Bragging rights.
That “Healing” Center Offers What, Now?

I will see if I can get a picture. Until then you’ll just have to take my word for it. Well, my friend’s word, as I haven’t seen it either.

It the window of a particular “healing” center is listed what they have to offer: Acupuncture, Herbs, Medicine, Miracles. Miracles? Why not skip the other three and just go with the miracles? What good are herbs if you can work miracles?
Dimland Radio Science Hero: Mr. Show

Long, long ago in the 1990s, HBO aired a sketch comedy program filled with irreverent, biting, satirical, and very funny pokes at society. It was called Mr. Show with Bob & David. And I loved it!

I’ve been watching the shows on YouTube. In one episode, they do an excellent send up of psychics. They nailed just how just of not real psychic powers really are. I liked it so much I decided to declare the show Dimland Radio Science Heroes.

Favorite Movies Of “All Time?”

There’s a Facebook group dedicated to discussing unusual movies. It’s called Incredibly Strange Films and it usually has some very intriguing posts. One member of the group chimed in asking us to list our top five all time favorite movies (they didn’t have to be strange). He started it off with his list of five. None of the films on his list was older than eight years. I commented that that was a rather limited list.

But, those might just be his five all time favorites.

Mine? I’m glad you. It really is impossible for me to narrow it down to five, but these are what I’ve come up with. None are out of the mainstream, but all are films I can (and have) watch again and again.

Ask me in a couple weeks and the list might be different.

Here they are:

Jaws (1975)
Wizard of Oz (1939)

3) A friend from my art school days has posted a couple of his sketches he’s done recently and they are pretty damn darn good!

2) On Showtime you can catch a documentary of one of my favorite bands. It’s called XTC: This Is Pop. It’s a little on the short side, but I think it’s pretty darn good!

1) With all the snow this week, I helped my next door neighbor by clearing the alley access to her garage, as well as her front sidewalk and stairs. I always do this, because she’s older and shouldn’t have to struggle with all that snow. She left a Thank You card (and some money) on our porch. I’d do it even if she didn’t gave us any money. And the thank you felt pretty darn good!

Movie Recommendation: None

I mentioned five films in my faves. Pick one of them.
