Something I Like To Do With Ice

It’s so tempting!

It happens mainly in spring, but it can also happen in fall. It’s that thin layer of ice that forms over puddles. And I just really enjoy stepping on that thin ice and break it.

It is a simple pleasure I take advantage as much as I can.

It’s Not True: You Can Only Balance An Egg On The First Day Of Spring

A coworker lamented this past Monday that she had forgotten to bring an egg to work. I asked why. “Today is the only day of the year you can balance an egg on its end.”

I was slowly shaking my head as she made the claim.

“Nope. You can balance an egg on any day of the year.”

I know. I’m a party pooper.

Cool Thing: An Unusual Caricature Of Me

The Gooey Louie game circa 1997.

Years ago, a coworker converted a Gooey Louie game into a caricature of me. A few simple lines made with a black Sharpie® and there I am. I think it really looks like me!

The best bit is that little loop as part of the glasses. Such a nice bit of detail.

I think it’s brilliant.

Making The Most Of Spontaneity

Late night talk shows always had plenty of planning going on. Planning that was intended to not look planned. It’s just something one accepts, but sometimes something happens that completed unexpected and that good hosts made the most of it.

Taking advantage an unexpected moment.

Johnny Carson was the best at making a funny unexpected moment even funnier. His brilliance at rolling with it and milking the moment hit its pinnacle with the Ed Ames tomahawk throwing demonstration. The demonstration didn’t go quite as planned and Johnny made the most of it.

Classic TV comedy!

Planned Spontaneity Is Lame

Jimmy Fallon is no Johnny Carson. He’s not horrible, but he just doesn’t work for me as a late night talk show host.

I admit that I haven’t watched much of his show, but I’ve seen enough to get the feeling that the show is just a little too planned, a little too phony for me. Ariana Grande and her lip synced, rehearsed participation in some randomized singer impression bit is a great example.

Now, I could be wrong about her lip syncing. I have no doubt that she can sing and do singing impression, but I do doubt she was singing on the set. And she and the band knew the key and tempo without any preparation? No way. It was rehearsed and Fallon’s reaction was all a put on.

Call me cynical, but I hate planned spontaneity.
