Jury Duty

I completed two weeks of my civic duty to serve as a juror in Ramsey County. This was my third (and hopefully last) opportunity to provide this service. I mean, come on! Three times?!

Of the three times, I had served as a juror on a criminal case in my first call to service and I sat for a week not getting on a jury the second time. This time I got on a civil case and it took the better part of two weeks. Despite needing to blow through my paid personal days and six of my vacation days, I found this jury duty fascinating. And I might a group of very nice and interesting people.

I did my best to give a brief accounting of what the case was about and how the other jurors and I came to our verdict.

Snow, So Much Snow

I often say that winter gets to me long about February. Usually by then I’ve had enough of the cold and the snow. And it’s been the snowiest February on record for Minnesota.

So, it’s February. And I’m tired of winter.

Three, No, Four Cool Things About Jury Duty

1) No phone interruptions! It was so nice to be able to focus on one task for those two weeks.
Interesting exterior, but the inside is quite impressive.
2) The Ramsey County Courthouse/St. Paul City Hall building is damn impressive. All kinds of stone and marble and wood, and plenty of gold leaf make this building an Art Deco wonder. It’s very impressive.
Vision Of Peace
3) The Vision Of Peace statue. Standing at 36 feet and weighing 60 tons this statue that is a tribute to peacefully setting conflicts is awesome. I went to look at as often as I could. If you are ever in St. Paul, you ought to take the time and visit this building and check out that amazing statue. Here’s a video focusing on the Vision Of Peace.

4) One the third floor, there is a memorial to the USS Ward, the ship that fired the first American shots of World War II. And my family lived next door to one of the fellows who served on that ship and his name is on the plaque of names honoring the men who started our fight back against the enemy. The video link in item 3 has a moment that focuses on the USS Ward.

A Dimland Radio Pedantic Moment: The Seven-Ups (1973)

Roy Scheider stars in this gritty cop drama (which features an excellent car chase) as the leader of an undercover group that would use tactics that might stretch legality to the breaking point. In fact, there’s a scene in which his character “tortures” a bad guy in a hospital bed for information by removing the oxygen tubes from his nose.

The bad guy would gasp for air, desperate to breathe.

Except, those little tubes that go up the nose don’t provide that much oxygen. I consulted with a friend who is physician’s assistant and she let me know that removing those tubes wouldn’t do much to bother a patient. If a patient needed a larger dose of oxygen, they would be wearing a mask not using those little tubes.

Movie Recommendation: Look Who’s Back (2015)

Part Network (1976), part Borat (2006), Look Who’s Back is a dark satire produced in Germany that imagines what it would be like if Adolf Hitler somehow, instead of dying in 1945, was transported to the present day.

It’s pretty dark and, at times, very funny. It’s an intriguing thought experiment. It’s streaming (not for free) on Netflix. Check it out.

I’m So Tired

Winter weather has a way of sapping all of your energy. Here in Minnesota we had the super-cold brought to the Upper Midwest thanks to an attack by the Polar Vortex, which was then followed by snow. All that shoveling and my snowblower is on the fritz, ugh.

My poor Soul in all that horrible snow.
So, from Thursday evening on through Friday night with all the clearing of snow, getting a van out of a ditch, and finally cleaning two buildings, I was pretty pooped when I recorded the show.

I talked about how the national news media seems to concentrate on Chicago when these extreme cold events take place in the Upper Midwest, despite the fact it was colder in the Twin Cities, but before I get too selfish in my suffering I must remember those poor folks in California. The headline to the article here made me laugh. As it was intended to.

Puts things in perspective, doesn’t it?
Superbowl? What Superbowl? Um. The One That Was Played By The LA Rams And New England Patriots, Duh

There were plenty of people disappointed by Superbowl 50-whatever, because there wasn’t much offense. The game was tied at 3 points going into the 4th quarter (soccer fans must have loved the game though), before the Patriots pulled away. But, until then it was either team’s game to win.

A defensive struggle doesn’t make it a bad game.

Congratulations to New England. That’s quite a dynasty there.

Is It Blackface Or Just Soot

An article on the internets received a resounding “Aw, come on!” by folks on social media recently. A screen shot of an article headline and photo (see above) was shared on Facebook and people were outraged at the suggestion. They thought the professor was just looking to be offended.

Although, I am inclined to agree there was no blackface per se, I did follow the advice I gave to the upset internet crowd. I read the article and there is something to what the academic claimed. You can read the article here and learn about Hottentots here.

My advice to Facebook.

I Don’t Care For Musicals

In general, I don’t care much for musicals. I guess it’s my pedantic nature. “How does everyone know the lyrics and all the dance steps?” So, when I talked about that possibly, inadvertently racist blackface number in Mary Poppins, I was reminded of the last time I watched that movie.

It was many years ago, when my nephew was just a boy. Mary Poppins was on TV and we watched it and that number came on. It was the song and dance number called Step In Time. It’s a call and response sort of thing. Dick Van Dyke’s character would call out a phrase and the chimney sweeps would sing it back and dance all over the rooftops of Old London.

The routine is rather long. It got very tedious for me. That may be why I don’t care for musicals. The song and dance numbers just slow down the story. For me anyway.

Hmmm. I think I might not have gotten to lyrics exactly right.

I Talked About The Latest Bit Of Ugliness

I tried to keep it brief, because I don’t have all the answers. But keeping it brief wasn’t easy.

The “Smirking teen (and classmates) and the Native Elder” incident in Washington, DC was more complicated and a deeper story than the first reports in the news media and on social media indicated.

The Catholic boys they weren’t quite as evil as the internet and the news thought, but they weren’t heroes and they weren’t saints. Their chaperones failed them and mob mentality took hold for a time.
The Native Elder’s heart was in the right place, but he may not have taken the best course of action.
Oh, and there was a third group: Five members of the Black Hebrew Israelites (BHI) sect. Those fellows were the biggest assholes of the day. They were the instigators. They were the provocateurs. They were the ones hurling the racist rhetoric, both at the white kids and, long before the incident, at the Native Americans who were there to take part in a ceremony.
However, I’m not letting the Catholic boys of the hook. They may have been provoked and the led to some displaying the “Tomahawk Chop” as the Native Elder and other Native Americans approached to get between the boys (the little assholes) and the BHI fellows (the big assholes). The “Tomahawk Chop” is at the very least a racially sensitive gesture and, as someone stated on my Facebook page, provoked racism is still racism.
I’m going to link to other’s opinions and points of view. I’ll also link to the video the BHI fellows has produced themselves. The portrait format of their video is the least offensive aspect of it. And you know how much I hate vertical video.

Check them out.
From The Atlantic comes a pretty thorough run-down of what the various videos showed happened that day: Here.
Also from The Atlantic is this article about how video can tell different stories depending on what’s show and from what point of view. Here.
From The Chicago Tribune, an opinion how how the high schoolers were failed by their adult chaperones. Here.
From Glenn Beck comes a more conservative viewpoint, in which he conveniently leaves out the “Tomahawk Chop” done by some of the Covington boys: Here.
And, if you can stomach it, the video made by the assholes who instigated the whole thing: Here.

Indulging In A Fantasy

And to wrap up my talk on the ugliness, I fantasized about what I would like to have said to the entire crowd that day.

The MAGA Hat

It may not be fair, but, like it or not, the Make America Great Again hat is now considered to be a symbol of racism. In the interest of fairness and charity, the hat may have started life as just a campaign slogan and a show of support, but that’s not what it is now. Now, it’s seen by many to just be the modern equivalent of the white hood.

Like it or not, wearing it is a distraction you don’t need.

And the slogan is regressive and silly. America may have been great for some in whatever time period the MAGA hat wearers are thinking of, but not for all. How about we look forward? How about we try to make America great for everyone?

That’s a goal worth striving for, don’t you think?

Hand Gestures And Black Face

A couple photos surfaced on the internets of the Covington kids at sporting events that raised eyebrows and were claimed as evidence of the systematic racism of the boys and their school. One images shows the boys playing basketball and making the OK gesture, which is said to be a symbol that means “white power.” The other shows a section student fans at a basketball game attempting to intimidate an opposing player. Four of those student fans are in black face.

There’s an attempt (see here) to explain and put into context these two images. I think the OK gestures are probably not the racist signal, but black face is never cool.

You can click here to learn more about the white power OK gesture.

It’s Not True: Cow Tipping

It may be possible, but it’s highly unlikely that anyone has really gone cow tipping. For one thing, it would be extremely difficult. For another, where are the videos of people tipping cow? Hmmm.

This video explains how cow tipping is not likely. It takes a while to get to it, but there some other interesting things in there about cows and gates.

A Dimland Radio Pedantic Moment: Bad Grammar On The Internets

I know. I shouldn’t expect a celebrity gossip site to have well written sentences, but I can complain, can’t I? Here is where the offending sentence (actually, sentence fragment) can be found.

Three Cool Things

1) There was a total lunar eclipse this past week. That’s cool. And, while that was happening, the moon was struck by a meteorite. That’s double cool!

2) Sarah Silverman and Patton Oswalt get attacked by trolls online from time to time. Recently, both decided to see why their trolls were so angry and what might be happening in their lives. Both comedians decided to help rather than block or to return the anger.

3) I had a camera in my penis! It wasn’t the most comfortable sensation, but seeing inside my wiener and my bladder. I’ve been having some peeing problems. But no cancer! I’m on a medication that should help. Not having to pee all the time would be cool.

I Was Challenged

This is the actual story.
You may recall a story I told a couple shows back about a skeptic sharing a bit of fake news on Facebook. It was my position that they should have known better. They should have taken the time to make certain the story was true and that the site was a reliable source for news.

At the time I did a quick Google search using the story’s headline – Georgia Man Cuts Off His Own Penis To Stop Masturbating. I added “Snopes” to the headline and immediately found an article on Snopes debunking this bit of fake news.

Done and done.

However, a friend of the show challenged me to do a deeper dive. So, I did. I tell the story of that deeper dive on the show.

New Year’s Resolutions

Normally, I make only one resolution each year and it’s always the same: I resolve each year to live to see the next year. One of these years I’ll break that resolution.

But this year, I realized I had made two other resolutions. It wasn’t an intentional thing, I was just thinking that I was determined to finally finish a portrait I had started and had been tickling at for a couple years. I also had been thinking I was determined to be a more positive and less snarky presence on Facebook. Not that I won’t ever snark, but I’ll try to tone it down a bit.

Then it hit me! I just made two resolutions! Heaven help me!

Well, let’s see how I do.

An Examination Of Lazy Photoshopping

Look at those poorly Photoshopped big pants!
Someone thought it would be funny to make Pres. Trump look fat by Photoshopping really big pants on him in the official holiday photo the President and First Lady took last year.

Oh, har, har! Look at the big pants!

I used the photo to explain how to spot poorly done photo fakery.

Of course, one could just do a quick Google search to find the actual image.

A Dimland Pedantic Moment: Listener Questions Are Questionable

I have been listening to and really enjoying the Slate podcast Hit Parade. It’s a monthly podcast on which host Chris Molanphy examines some aspect of pop music history. I don’t always care for the music, but I still find the podcast fascinating.

The main show comes out near the end of each month, but they release a mini episode as a connection between shows in the middle of the month. They call it The Bridge episode. On the bridge podcast the host and one of the show’s producers will follow-up on the previous show and preview the next show. They also have a listener call in to partake in a three question trivia challenge. The first question of the challenge has to do with the previous show’s topic, while the second and third questions relate to the upcoming show.

Then the listener gets to attempt to stump the host with a trivia question. The implication being the listener crafts the question themselves, except, call me cynical, the question also has to do with the upcoming episode and they sound too professionally written.

Hm. Am I being pedantic or am I being cynical?

Three Cool Things

Skeptics to the left of me, birders to the right…
1) The above photograph was taken be my friend Craig at the most recent MN Skeptic’s meet-up. A meet-up that happened to coincide with another group that Craig meets with: A gathering of birders for talking about birds and drinking beer. It was an usually crowded night for the skeptics. The birders were pretty cool.

2) Craig also clued me onto this young musician from Germanland. Her name is Sina (pronounced See-Nah. I got it wrong on the show.) She’s very talented and has quite the appreciation for the music I like. How can I not like this kid?! She posts videos of herself playing the drum parts of famous drummers flawlessly. Her videos include her explaining why Ringo Starr was great, there’s an absolutely beautiful version of The Beatles’ Something with Avonlea an equally young and talent singer, and there are videos of Sina playing Keith Moon’s part on My Generation and Won’t Get Fooled Again. Kids today! I tell ya!

3) The decidedly not cool and not punk novelty album Chipmunk Punk by Alvin & the Chipmunks is horrible. I explain why it ain’t punk. It has covers of songs by Linda Ronstadt, Tom Petty, Queen, and Billy Joel – punk icons all. This album is so not punk, it might just be pun… Um. Hang on…

Anyway, on my Spotify I came up with a punk alternative listing of songs Alvin & Co could have covered. And that’s cool. If I say so myself.

You can find and follow me on Spotify. Search Jim Fitzsimons and you’ll find my playlists.

However, here’s the list with links!

Just imagine those songs as sung by those pesky rodents.

I Was Wrong

If you read the show notes from last week you will know that I was wrong in the Dimland Radio ARGH! segment. I thought the song Auld Lang Syne was replaced by New York, New York as the first song heard in the new year.

Well, the traditional song was played, but not for long.

It’s still an ARGH! just not as argh-y as it was when I thought the song was skipped entirely.

Check out last’s week show notes here.

A Dimland Radio ARGH!: Jury Duty

For third time in my adult life I have received the summons to do my civic duty and report for jury duty next month. Great. Now I’ll have to burn my three personal days and two days of vacation (assuming I need to be there the whole week), so that I can continue to pay the bills.

Great. Just great.

A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Admonishments

It’s making me hungry now.
Well, maybe not a thousand, exactly. But, when I smartassedly decided to, for the first time ever, take a picture of a meal I was about to eat and post it on Facebook, I was admonished for suggesting a Quarter Pounder with Cheese Meal from McDonald’s is food.

It is food. Maybe not great food, but it’s food.

Try telling that to some people.

One Cool Thing

I only had time for one cool thing this week.

I was invited to contribute to an art show in Minneapolis. It’s at Solid State Vinyl Records and the art assignment was to take an existing album cover and make some new art out of it. I decided to do something that would both reflect my sense of humor and my skepticism.

The original.
I took the Disneyland record of scary sound effects The Chilling, Thrilling Sounds of the Haunted House and converted it to The Thrilling Sounds of the House. It turned out OK.

My version. It’s a little distorted due to it being a photograph and not a scan.

Are These The Sexiest Videos Of All-Time?

Ginger Lynn Allen

On the one snarky, celebrity gossip site (What Would Tyler Durden Do) I check out, one of the contributors gave a list of what they think are the five sexiest music videos of all-time. Now, they did admit they think skanky can be very sexy. And their number 1 pick is definitely on the skanky side.

I gave my thoughts on the five videos.

The number 1 video (which is not safe for work) isn’t sexy at all. It’s downright depressing. Click here to check out the list.
