My Foot Still Hurts

It’s been months now. I’m reasonably certain that is plantar fasciitis. I’ve had it before. Well, I’ve got it again.

That’s how I started last week’s show notes blog. This week is much the same. The difference is I’m days away from seeing a foot doctor. They better not recommend acupuncture!

A Compare And Contrast Of Two Classic 70s Disaster Films

Last week, when talking about The Poseidon Adventure (1972), I mentioned that The Towering Inferno (1974) is my favorite of the disaster movies of my youth. I won’t go into all the reasons here (I do want you to listen to the show), but I will give a big reason for my preference.

Arguing.

It’s the difference between arguing and cooperating.

Cooperating

Cooperation is part of both stories, but Poseidon really leans into the arguing. The two main characters spending so much time shouting at each other. In the Tower, the two leads might have had a bit of a rough start, but they get past it and get down to the business of saving lives.

More Sports Talk

Last week, I talked about that crazy game between the MN Vikings and the Buffalo Bills. But since last week’s show, the Vikings have played two games. The first one they got their clocks cleaned by the Dallas Cowboys. It was a classic Vikings post big win let down.

Getting their butts kicked by Dallas on Sunday.

Then came the Thanksgiving Day game against the New England Patriots. It wasn’t as crazy as the Bills game, but it was another come from behind, scrappy win. I don’t know what to make of this team.

Squeaking out another scrappy win on Thursday.

Someone on the internet stated, back when their record was 7-1, the Vikes were the worst 7-1 team in the league. This is a sentiment my brother-in-law agrees with. However, as another internet person put it, that’s better than being the best 1-7 team. That’s a sentiment with which I agree.

One thing is for certain, it has been an interesting season.

When A Picture Is Worth A Thousand WTFs

Just look at that image!

Allow me to rephrase what it says in the graphic: From left to right. Lara Trump (married to Eric and not part of the tangled web, as far as I know), Marla Maples (the first mistress and second wife of Fearless Loser), Tiffany Trump (daughter of Marla and Loser), Melania Trump (second mistress and third and current wife of the Coup Attempter), and Ivanka Trump (half sister of Tiffany and daughter of the first wife Ivana Trump).

What. The. Fuck.

“When your a star, they let you do it.”

LOCK HIM UP!

Movie Recommendation: God Forbid: The Sex Scandal That Brought Down A Dynasty

This documentary, available on Hulu, shows the deep hypocrisy of the wealthy couple running Liberty University very clearly. The school is meant to churn our Christian foot soldiers for God. It has very strict code of conduct standards, which the students must obey at all times.

But! The super-weathly Falwell couple can indulge their every decadent whim. Sure, they have to do it on the sly. They even get to be king-makers. Jerry Falwell Jr. endorsed Fearless Loser and the evangelicals followed suit.

Sigh.

My Foot Hurts

It’s been months now. I’m reasonably certain that is plantar fasciitis. I’ve had it before. Well, I’ve got it again.

The thing is when I have had it before it cleared up much, much faster than this time. In fact, it just doesn’t seem to want to clear up. It will improve for a day or two, then it’s right back to limping again. One step forward, two hobbles back.

I finally called for a doctor’s appointment, which is just a mere 11 days away from this writing. I guess I’ll just have to gimp around until then.

Oh! And it’s possible I have an ingrown toenail. On the same foot!

Of course, well-meaning coworkers have their suggestions. One, knowing I don’t go for this sort of thing, told of a friend or theirs who had tried all kinds of actual medical remedies, none of which worked; but then they tried acupuncture and the pain went away.

How does this work? It doesn’t.

Sigh.

Acupuncture doesn’t work.

And For Those Who Don’t Like Sports We Have Sports

Baseball is over. I miss it so. The Houston Astros beat the Philadelphia Phillies in six games in a fairly entertaining series that featured one game in which all seven runs of the game were scored through home runs by the Phillies in a shutout win.

The Astros followed up by throwing a combined no-hitter win. Crazy.

Speaking of crazy, there is football (American football, not that soccer thing) now and the Minnesota Vikings are winning. They are a scrappy bunch, who have come from behind to win five games as part of a seven game winning streak.

Yes, he made that catch.

When I recorded the show, the Vikes and their fans were still basking in the glory of their big win over the Buffalo Bills in Buffalo. It was a crazy game. It was another come from behind win and it was seven wins in a row.

The football world was finally coming around to thinking the Vikings were for real. The experts were amazing at how relentless this team had been on their way to an 8-1 record. And Justin Jefferson! Amazing! That catch!

Will it last?

The Vikings will have played two games by the time I record the next show. At least, one of those games wasn’t pretty. We’ll talk more then.

Movie Recommendation: Weird: The Al Yankovic Story

It’s really funny. My wife and I laughed quite a lot and were very entertained by this movie. Lots of fun cameos, including Weird Al himself. Daniel Radcliffe (you know, the guy who played Harry Potter) was very good. And he’s ripped!

Well, someone has been working out.

And! Everything in the movie is 100% true!

Watch it on the Roku channel.

Another Movie Recommendation: The Posideon Adventure (1972)

One of the better 1970s disaster movies, The Posideon Adventure is worth a watch. Not as good as my favorite of the genre, The Towering Inferno, but pretty good.

But, I couldn’t resist getting a little pedantic about it.

Next week, I think I’ll do a little compare and contrast between this and The Towering Inferno.

Tricks Or Treats Or Bullets

Halloween is over and winter has started. It snowed today. Ugh.

This year’s turnout of Trick or Treaters was well up from last year’s dismal dozen or so kids. This year we had approximately 55. I had lost track counting a couple of the larger groups.

I was happy with 55. What I wasn’t happy about was the two vehicles moving at high speeds through residential areas with guns ablazin’.

The incident didn’t even rate a blurb in the papers.

Red Wave? What Red Wave?

Cartoonist Lisa Benson got it wrong.

A couple weeks ago, I lamented about having a sinking feeling there was going to be a “Red Wave” in the impending mid-term elections. I believed the American people had forgotten the old adage: Better dead than red! (I know, it meant Commies back in the day. It means something different now.)

This was more like it.

It was a Red Ripple. It was a Red Trickle. It was NOT a Red Wave.

Is Fearless Loser finally behind us?

Cool Thing: Watch It For Days’ Columbo Series Reviews On YouTube

It’s such a delightful review series full of background and production stories, fun facts, and histories of TV’s greatest detective Lt. Columbo. If you like Columbo, I think you will like this YouTuber. The host does a fine job, has a pleasant voice, and has a wry sense of humor.

So good are these videos that I came to regret a moment of pedantry I just couldn’t resist posting in the comments.

Treat yourself. Go here to watch their first review.

A Classic Halloween Cold Open

This is my Halloween (sort of) show, so I thought I’d replay (again) the cold open I did way back when about my love for October, Halloween, and It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.

It was also a great way to kill 7 and a half minutes of show material.

World Series 2022!

After an American League Championship Series (ALCS) that was hard to have a team I wanted to root for, the World Series of 2022 is under way.

The ALCS was between the Hated Yankees and the Houston Cheaters.

OK, maybe it’s not fair to hold the 2022 Houston Astros team responsible for the 2017 Astros’ system of cheating to benefit their hitters. The 2017, which saw the Astros win the World Series, were found to have been cheating. They were using video technology to find out what the next pitch would be and then relayed that information to the hitter by thumping on a trash can.

The Hated Yankees… Well, you know why I hate the NY Yankees.

So, who was I to root for? couldn’t root for both teams to lose. That would be silly.

Well, the Hated Yankees lost, so I guess that was the best outcome I could hope for.

Another year without the Bronx Bastards winning the World Series. For shame. Photo credit: MLB.com

Now, I’ll root for the Philadelphia Phillies to win.

Dana Gould’s Podcast, Being A Skeptic, Trying Not To Be An Asshole

On this year’s Halloween episode of Dana Gould’s podcast, Dana had a guest from Los Angeles’s punk rock scene during the late 70s into the 80s. Her name is Pleasant Gehman. She believes herself to be a witch, who has memories of seeing a UFO as a child, having the planchette of a Ouija board spell out messages without anyone touching it, and her being able to cause an Arizona State Trooper’s patrol car break down by merely crying.

These are some extraordinary claims for which she only has anecdotal evidence. And Dana’s new wife also chimed in with a paranormal claim with only anecdotal evidence.

I pointed out that, though I believe the guest and Dana’s wife to be sincere, in the words of Tim Minchin…

“Every mystery, throughout history, ever solved has turned out to be… not magic!

A Dimland Radio Pedantic Moment: Actors & Special Effects

I’ll spoil it for you, but please still listen to the show…

Tales From The Print Shop

I gotta be brief (ish) this week, because it’s getting late. I hope you understand.

The show started with a tale of how I screwed up an order that came into the shop recently. It was a job for which the customer supplied the garments to be printed.

The customer wanted to see a photo of the first print. I put that info on the write up. But, I didn’t check the write up when I saw the first print. Uh oh.

Adult People Believe This!

Seriously! FOR REAL?!

California has Disneyland. Florida has Disney World. Kentucky has… Ark Encounter.

All are indulgences in fantasy. Except there are adult people who believe Ark Encounter isn’t a fantasy. There are adult people who believe in the myth of a worldwide flood caused by God, because his people behaved wickedly, so goodbye all life on Earth.

Yikes! Talk about throwing the baby out with the bath water. (There’s a pun in there somewhere.)

No worries. God instructed old Noah, a not wicked man, to build an ark to house mating pairs of every kind of animal for a year on the waters with which He would soon be flooding the entire planet.

Yes. There are adults who believe this!

And some of those adult people built Ark Encounter in Kentucky to show other adult people and their kids the silliness that is the story of Noah’s ark. Sure, some people go to Ark Encounter to snicker at the silliness, but most who attend believe that in ancient times God instructed the 500 year-old Noah to build…

Wait! What now? 500 hundred years old[1]? And it took him 100 years to complete the ark? Adult people believe this?! Yes! Adult people believe this.

Sigh.

You’re Not An Atheist. You’re Agnostic

A longtime friend of mine insisted that I could only really be agnostic, as in I don’t know there is a God, and not an atheist, as in I know there is no God. But an atheist doesn’t believe there is a God or gods. They don’t necessarily know there isn’t a God or gods.

(That said, there are no gods.)

Ok, maybe I don’t know God doesn’t exist, but I certainly don’t believe one (or any) exists.

I should have asked my friend if he was agnostic about Zeus.

Cool Thing: Babcock Ranch, Florida

America’s first solar-powered town didn’t lose power or the internet as a result of Hurricane Ian the way much of its neighboring city Fort Myers did.

Babcock Ranch is a town of 2000 residents that was specifically built to run on electricity generated entirely from solar power. It was also designed to have its streets flood and not its houses.

This is way cool!

Smart, long-term thinking and planning could help weather future such storms in other cities in the future. We just need to stop the short-term horse and buggy thinking.

Werewolf By Night: A Review

This transformation scene picks up on elements of Mike Ploog’s art from the original comic books.

My goodness! Is that the time? I’ll have to keep this review short.

I really like the Werewolf By Night Special on Disney+. Perfect? No, but what is? It was fun and I was entertained. What else should I asked for?

A longer review (with spoilers!) by me and my fellow members of the GOOCH Squad can be found on my friend Douglas Arthur’s podcast: Assault of the 2-Headed Spaces Mules.
