My Scam Story Update

Back on the March 24 show I told how I may have fallen for a scam. The scammers said they would send the company I work for an invoice. Well, thus far the invoice has yet to show up. It appears that what they were really doing was fishing for a credit card number.

JREF 2012 Pigasus Awards

Each year on April 1st the good folks at the James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF) present their Pigasus Awards. The awards are given to the people or organizations that do the most to promote paranormal, psuedoscience and just plain nonsense. Go here to hear the man himself announce this year’s batch of “winners.”

Ten Minute Topic With Chris Brown

My skeptical friend Chris Brown

This time our TMT talk wasn’t about skepticism, it was about a fundraising event that Chris’ son Ethan is putting on to benefit his local library. The event is tied in with the number Tau (6.28) which is 2 x Pi (3.14). We talk about the number and Ethan’s upcoming attempt to recite from memory Tau out to 2000 places. The event is to take place May 6, 2012.

You can learn more and pledge to this fine cause here.

The Misadventures Of My Son, Hayden

Hayden had a rough start to March and another rough start to April. On March 1st, Hayden managed to tear his thumbnail away, just a bit, from his thumb. It hurt like the dickens and Hayden got so worked up he passed out.

April 1st (no fooling), Hayden complained of stomach problems. We gave him an antacid and minutes later he threw up. It was only the second time he had vomited in his life. We suspect food poisoning.

Titanic Talkers

Way back in 1997 I went to see Titanic with my parents. It was a packed theater and we were lucky enough to sit in front of two elderly, loud talking gals. Perhaps if they’d have piped down we might have realized how silly the story was. Spoiler alert: The ship sinks.

Movie Recommendation: The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash (1978)

A loving parody of The Beatles from the mind of Eric Idle. Pretty funny stuff and the songs aren’t half bad. Fellow Pythoners Michael Palin and Neil Innes (he wrote the songs) contribute and several members of the Not Ready For Primetime Players of Saturday Night Live also appear. Be sure to watch for George Harrison’s cameo as a reporter.

Music heard on the show (Whenever Possible, I Will Link To The Song)…

Dimland Radio opening theme song: ‘Ram’ by The Yoleus
First ad break bumpers: ‘Luka‘ by Suzanne Vega & Real Worldby Husker Du
Second ad break bumpers: ‘Generals And Majors‘ by XTC & Change by Killing Joke

Even Me

Yep, even your humble host, Mr. Skeptic, can get caught by a scammer. I told two stories of encounters I’ve had with scammers. One much more recent, in which I don’t really do any damage. The another tale took place many years ago and I was out a few bucks, but learned a lesson.

It’s Not True: Daylight Savings Adds To Global Warming

I read a letter to the editor written to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette in 2007. I spotted the letter on my Facebook. The initial thought people (myself included) were having was how could someone be so stupid to think how we set our clocks has anything to do with global warming. However, the letter was real, but it was mean as satire.

Learn about it at snopes.com.

George Hrab Portrait

My portrait of the super George Hrab

Then I told the story of how awesome George Hrab is, because he generously assisted me in doing a portrait of him. You know, I like to do portraits and I could do one for you. I charge $250 for an 8″ x 10″ B/W. Interested? Email me at drdim@dimland.com.

Patrick Burns And Some Possible Poltergeist Activity

A Facebook friend posted a video by Patrick Burns that purports to show poltergeist activity. An orange moves…slightly. Mr. Burns wasn’t sure why it moved, but I gave my take on it.

You can watch the video here.

Hunger Games

In an example of just how out of touch I am, I admitted knowing nothing about Hunger Games until I saw Elizabeth Banks on Craig Ferguson’s show last week.

Movie Recommendation: American Graffiti (1973)

(Universal Pictures)

I finally saw this excellent movie in its entirety just this past week. An ensemble cast of mostly unknown (at the time) actors have a “bitchin'” night of cruising in their “boss” cars. It’s a heart-felt depiction of an innocence American would soon be losing, but not on that night.

Music heard on the show (Whenever Possible, I Will Link To The Song)…

Dimland Radio opening theme song: ‘Ram’ by The Yoleus
First ad break bumpers: ‘Running On The Spot‘ by The Jam & U Got The Lookby Prince
Second ad break bumpers: ‘Intruder‘ by Peter Gabriel & A Fire Burns by The Church
Closing song: ‘Angler’s Treble Hook’ by $5 Fiddle

Unfinished Business

I made some thank you’s to my loyal listeners and to management. Something I had forgotten to do on show 100.

My Demon Is Here!

Your host and his demon. They look so happy together!

A couple years back I announced in the Z Talk chat room that I had invited a demon to come to my house. This was no problem for me, because I have no fear of demons. Some in chat advised against my invitation. Ah, nothing to worry about.

Well, no demon ever showed up. No surprise there. But, I was going through some of my old toys I found that I already had a demon. It’s the demon Etrigan who was created by Jack “The King” Kirby for DC Comics.

A closer look at my demon.

I Hate Summer

Sure, it’s only March 17th, but summer-like weather is here and I’m sweating. I hate sweating when I’m just sitting around. But summer isn’t all bad, I squeezed in an amusing anecdote from several summers ago. I told how I got a teenage gir
l tell me, “Just looking at you makes me hot!” You don’t say.

Science Changes It Mind AGAIN!

What is with science? Why can’t it get its story straight?

Back on my 8/21/10 show I told how paleontologists had discovered that the Triceratops and Torosaurus dinosaurs were not separate species, but that the Triceratops was the juvenile version of the Torosaurus. See the shows for the 8/21/10 show here.

Well, not so fast. A team of paleontologists have found some very good evidence that they are indeed two different dinosaurs. See that story here.

NOT Finding Bigfoot

I then spend some time critiquing an episode Finding Bigfoot. I give it a good going over but suffice to say the intrepid team do not find a bigfoot.

Watch them not find bigfoot here.

Movie Recommendation: Tombstone (1993)

(Buena Vista Pictures)

A very entertaining Western with an outstanding performance by Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday.

Music heard on the show (Whenever Possible, I Will Link To The Song)…

Dimland Radio opening theme song: ‘Ram’ by The Yoleus
First ad break bumpers: ‘The One Thing‘ by INXS & Smokeless Zoneby XTC
Second ad break bumpers: ‘Down In The Seine‘ by The Style Council & The KKK Took My Baby Away by The Ramones
Closing song: ‘Angler’s Treble Hook’ by $5 Fiddle
