Nervous?

I talked about being nervous before going on the air.  I also talked about my son being in a school play for his class.

Don’t Be That Guy

I commented on a picture posted by a Facebook friend.  It was a somewhat unkind and presumptuous statement and I was taken to task.  Initially, I was going to be that guy and not give in to the commenter who was actually right.  But, I realized I was in the wrong.  So, I wasn’t that guy.

It’s Not True: Urine Alleviates Jelly Fish Stings

It kind of does, but the urine needs to be of a highly concentrated nature.  Vinegar, rubbing alcohol, or sea water will work much better.  Learn more about it here.

And see what Tyler Durden says about a movie featuring Nicole Kidman peeing on Zac Efron here.  Sounds a lot more sexy than it actually is in the movie.

Nobody To Watch Over Me

Because I’m an atheist, I don’t believe in heaven with god(s) and my dead relatives watching me.  This is both freeing and a bit disquieting.  But it is good to know grandma isn’t watching me have sex.
Not A Fan Of Jazz
I admit that I may just be plug ignorant, but Jazz just doesn’t do it for me.  I talked about why the more out there forms of Jazz drive me crazy.  I also have a go at Jeff Goldblum’s character in Law & Order: Criminal Intent.  Jeff Goldblum plays jazz piano and, lo and behold, so does his character!

Movie Recommendation: Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1978)

United Artists

The bleek and startling remake of the 1956 film stars Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams, Veronica Cartwright, Jeff Goldblum and Leonard Nimoy.  Watch for the cameo of Kevin McCarthy (star of the original) running through the streets shouting, “They’re here!”

Twins Win!  Twins Win!

I made a brief mention of my poor MN Twins having won a fourth game in a row.  How ’bout that?

A Little Love For The Grammar Nazis?

Well, sort of.  I talked about a common phrasing that drives me nuts and I argued that Grammar Nazis might actually be doing us a service by getting people to care about spelling.

Talk About A Bad Diet

I related the sad story of a Swiss woman starving to death, because she thought she could live on sunlight and air alone.  She would have done better on just bread and water, despite what the Bible says.

The story is here and James Randi talks about the man this woman got the bad idea from here.

My Full Body Apparition
I told the tale about seeing a man standing in my bedroom in the middle of the night many, many years ago.  I was no more than 10 years-old at the time, when I saw him and panicked and called for Mom and Dad.  Thankfully it wasn’t a ghost and a burglar.  My parents assured me it was my eyes playing tricks on me.

I’m so glad my parents gave me the rational explanation and not the fanciful one that it might have been a g-g-g-ghost!  Zoinks!!

The Screaming Blue Messiahs
Way back on July 22, 1986 at the Minneapolis nightclub, First Avenue, my friend John and I and everyone there were treated to an excellent, surprising, incredible set by a relatively unknown band, The Screaming Blue Messiahs.  They were opening for the somewhat better known band, The Cramps.  The Messiahs were a revelation and blew The Cramps away!

Each of the bumper tunes I played on the show were Screaming Blue Messiahs’ songs, including their one minor hit, ‘I Wanna Be A Flintstone.’  Scroll down for links to a few of their songs.  The songs are awesome!

I blogged about that unbelievable show here.  I also mentioned this clip of The Cramps from the concert film, Urgh! A Music War.  Watch it at your own risk.

Movie Recommendation: The Four Musketeers (1974)

20th Century Fox

Last week I recommended The Three Musketeers so this week I went with the sequel, The Four Musketeers.  Both films were made at the same time.  In fact, it was supposed to be a three hour epic, but the studio realized they had enough to make two films.  Same director and cast and, yes, more of the yummy Raquel Welch.

Music heard on the show (Whenever Possible, I Will Link To The Song)…

Dimland Radio opening theme song: ‘Ram’ by The Yoleus
First ad break bumpers: ‘Talking Doll‘ & Let’s Go Down To The Woodsby The Screaming Blue Messiahs
Second ad break bumpers: ‘Wall Of Shame‘ by Killing Joke & I Wanna Be A Flintstone by The Screaming Blue Messiahs
Closing song: ‘Angler’s Treble Hook’ by $5 Fiddle

What The Hell Happened To Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?!

I told about how the new version of “Millionaire” upsets me.  The contestants no longer sit, they stand, and that seems to allow for undignified behavior.

Memories: 9/11

I give my memory of finding out the events of 9/11, as accurately as I can remember.  But don’t forget that memory is not video tape.

Memories:  A Family Ghost Story
It was my mother who told me about the ghost sighting story Grandpa Fitzsimons had told her.  Of course, I don’t believe Grandpa actually saw the ghost of his grandmother.  I talked about how memory is very fallible in that my mother told the story one way in the ’70s and another way just a couple years ago.

Gross Out
In uncharacteristic fashion, I talked a little gross out stuff.  Namely, hocking loogies.  Yuck!

Movie Recommendation: The Three Musketeers (1973)

20th Century Fox

A very fun and entertaining swashbuckler by director Richard Lester.  A good deal of sword-fighting, humor and Raquel Welch.  What could be better?

Music heard on the show (Whenever Possible, I Will Link To The Song)…

Dimland Radio opening theme song: ‘Ram’ by The Yoleus

You Didn’t Tell Us The Property Was Already Occupied!

A New Jersey couple seem to have come up with a novel idea to get out of their lease.  They claim that their house is haunted.  Sure it is.  And ABC News filed the usual pretty credulous report on the alleged haunting.

If given the two options of a haunted house or a couple trying to break their lease, Occam’s Razor would urge you to favor the latter possibility.

Another Bigfoot Video And An Interesting Thread

Yep, another video was posted on YouTube of what looks like a guy in an ape costume.  But the claim is that it’s a bigfoot.  I posted the link on my Facebook page and an interesting thread ensued.

The Water Horse And Its Inaccuracies
This 2007 family film gives its take on the Loch Ness Monster myth.  It’s an enjoyable, if not great, film.  It does have a couple things that troubled me.  It suggested that the famous Surgeon’s Photo (the most well known image of the alleged beastie), first published in 1934, was taken in 1942.  It also made it look as though the Loch open right out into the North Sea.

Not killers of my enjoyment of the film, but amusing mistakes.

Close Talking Actors
I talked about seeing close talkers so often in film and TV shows.  An early episode of Law & Order having two characters a conversation and standing so close to each other that I got uncomfortable.

Movie Recommendation: Papillon (1973)

Columbia Pictures

I saw this movie way back in 1974 when I was 9.  Seeing it since then surprises me with the amount of adult material.  It’s a prison film and it’s very good.  Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman are excellent.

Music heard on the show (Whenever Possible, I Will Link To The Song)…

Dimland Radio opening theme song: ‘Ram’ by The Yoleus
