dimland radio 8-3-13 show notes

Pedantic Moment

Remember that girl you never noticed in high school?  That’s the question asked in some car commercial, I think.  No matter.  The answer would have to be no.  How does one remember someone they never noticed?

Penn and Sean

I talked some about Penn Jillette’s podcast and a point he was going to make, but he became distracted and never got to his point.  That’s something I find so annoying.

I also find Sean Hannity quite annoying.  And it’s not always due to his politics.

Well, duh!

Guess who will have a better chase getting a stranger to consent for some impromptu sex:  a young attractive woman or young attractive man?  Anyone want to bet on the dude getting some quick, non-committal sex?

Well, the folks at Whatever, an online video prank group, decided to give it try.  You can learn more here

Before And After Only An Hour

A personal trainer named Andrew Dixon decided to demonstrate the deceptiveness of those weight loss/muscle gain before and after pictures.  With a little grooming, a few push-ups, some flexing and a change of lighting, Mr. Dixon showed it doesn’t take much to fool people.

Check it out here.

Celebs Don’t Die In Threes

It might seem as though celebs die in threes, but really it’s more how people notice things.  Celebs die everyday, you just don’t hear about most of them because they may not be famous enough.  NBC News online explained the misperception here.

Live From New York!

I have been watching the original Saturday Night Live program on Netflix.  It’s been and intriguing experience.  The original cast is funny, but not as funny as we tend to remember them.  What I find most interesting is the time capsule aspect of it. Netflix has nearly every episode available for download.

10 Years Old With Thoughts As Bold As Thoughts Can Be

My son Hayden has just turned 10 years old.  Where does the time go?

Movie Recommendation: Looper (2012)

TriStar Pictures

This is a terrific bit of sci-fi!  It’s directed by Rian Johnson (I think I said it was Rain) and stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, and Emily Blunt.  It’s a very good that will bend your mind.  One of the best time travel that I’ve seen.  This film is very clever and has a very satisfying ending.

dimland radio 7-20-13 show notes

Guest Cohost?

No, not on my show.  I was a guest cohost on the latest edition of the Stuck In The 80s podcast.  It took nearly eight years, but the show finally featured a voice I can listen to all day.  And often do.

I had an excellent time and look forward to being on the show again.  I hope the ratings are good.  Do they have ratings in podcastland?

Rough Week, Too Much Heat And Work

I lamented the amount of work, actual physical labor! that I was subjected to this past week.  And it was hot and humid with no air conditioning at work.  Yuck!  I hate summer.

A Little More Twins Talk

I took a little time to give credit to the MN Twins having managed to beat the Hated Yankees twice!  In New York!  How ’bout that?!

A Dimland Radio Science Zero: Jenny McCarthy and ABC’s The View

Once again, I noted the danger of Jenny McCarthy’s misguided and unscientific and false claims of childhood vaccines causing autism.  Now ABC is giving Ms Show-Us-Your-Boobs 1993 the platform of The View to spew her dangerous views.  Even if she never mentions vaccines on the show, she has been given unwarranted credibility.

There were several others out there adding their voices to the outcry.  I’ll make them Dimland Radio Science Heroes!  Congratulations James Poniewozik, Alex Pareene, Michael Specter, and Emily Willingham.  Thanks to them for helping spread the word.

Never Found In The 80s: Love Tractor

Another band to come out of the Athens, Georgia alternative music scene, but didn’t get as popular as The B-52s and REM.  You can see my writeup here.

Jehovah Hates Magic

I spotted a disturbing video on the YouTube teaching Jehovah’s Witnesses who to guilt their kids into not liking magic, because that would make Jehovah sad.  Jehovah hates magic, except when Jesus does it.  Those are miracles, not magic.  It’s just sad the crazy religious beliefs out there.

Trapped Chinese Woman Thought To Be Ghost

A woman in China attempted to take a shortcut, but ended up getting stuck in a wall.  She was stuck for seven hours, because nearby residents though her cries for help were the shrieks of a ghost.  As Tim Farley might tell you, “That’s the harm in believing in ghosts.  Well, one of them.”

Find the story here.

Another TAM Has Come And Gone…

…And I missed it!  Again.  Oh, well, there’s always next year.

Movie Recommendation: Man Bites Dog (1993)

Les Artistes Anonymes

This one is a bit of a challenge.  It is possibly the most disturbing I’ve ever seen.  It’s still an intriguing examination of a group of documentarians chronicling the exploits of a serial killer.  The film is darkly funny as it demonstrates the thinness of the line between observers of events and participants of those events.

It is disturbing, so it may not be for everyone.

Music heard on the show…

Dimland Radio opening theme song: ‘Ram’ by The Yoleus
First ad break bumpers: ‘Chardonnay‘ by Game Theory & Beatle Boots by Love Tractor
Second ad break bumpers: ‘Here In My House‘ by 54-40 & Monster Man by The Suburbs
Closing song: ‘Angler’s Treble Hook’ by $5 Fiddle

dimland radio 7-13-13 show notes

Oops!  Really?

I recapped the story of my son’s bed, which was improperly shipped by Sears.  The bed arrived with a couple broken parts, which I replaced with some plywood, not wanting to go through the arduous process required by Sears to correct their shipping issues.

Well, Sears sent an email asking us how they did.  I let them know they didn’t do very well and their automatic response was, “Oops.”  Really?  Is that really the way they want to put it?

Randy Travis/Mr. Fantastic?

Mr. Travis and Mr. Fantastic

I saw a recent photograph of Randy Travis the other day.  He’s been in the news recently, because, sadly, he’s in pretty bad shape.  The recent photo made me think how much Mr. Travis resembles Mr. Fantastic (Reed Richards) of the Marvel superhero group the Fantastic Four.

A Little Twins Talk

At some point in my talk about Randy Travis I side-tracked myself to talk about my MN Twins horrible record against the Hated Yankees (yes, again) and how they were about to lose another three in a row to the Evil Empire.

Well, they did lose Friday night’s game, but, what do you know? Those hapless Twins beat the Hated Yankees on Saturday.  Yay!

Pedantic Moment: Brad Pitt And Wilford Brimley

Actors Brad Pitt and Wilford Brimley have been getting passed around the Twitter-world lately.  Folks are saying that Brad, as he stars in World War Z, and Wilford, as he starred in Cocoon, were both 49.  Well, in my pedantic fashion, I pointed out that Wilford was 50.

I speculated how much I’d enjoy letting my older brother and sister know that they are both older than Wilford when he made The Natural (he was 48 or 49 making that one) and rub it in.  Then I remembered I’m 48.

Now, Children, Stay Away From Atheists

Beware, kids!  Atheists are known to eat babies!

On the Facebook I spotted an image depicting a flyer handed out to, I’m assuming, young Christians warning them to stay away from atheists.  Atheists think they have all the answers, but are so sad, so stay away, kids!  Ha ha.

Mr. Show And Mohammed

Bob Odenkirk and David Cross starred in HBO’s Mr. Show, a comedy sketch show. It was very funny and irreverent.  One sketch they did in 1997 featured cartoon vignettes with one being a depiction of Mohammed.  As far as I know, there was no uprising in the Muslim world because of it.  I wondered why that was.

Dave’s Story

My friend Dave picked up a copy of Carl Sagan’s Demon Hunted World for cheap and he put it on display and the comic store at which he works.  His intention was to give it away to the first person who asked about it.  Someone finally asked.  Dave was delighted.

Movie Recommendation: War Of The Worlds (1953)

Paramount Pictures

This movie set the bar for the science fiction films that followed.  It looks pretty good.  It gets its planetary science wrong, but still.

Music heard on the show…

Dimland Radio opening theme song: ‘Ram’ by The Yoleus
First ad break bumpers: ‘Everyone A Puzzle Lover‘ by 10,000 Maniacs & Shadow Line (To J. Conrad) by The Fleshtones
Second ad break bumpers: ‘Pink To Turns To Blue‘ by Husker Du & Beating My Head by Red Lorry Yellow Lorry
Closing song: ‘Angler’s Treble Hook’ by $5 Fiddle

That’s it! See you next Saturday night for Dimland Radio 11 Central, midnight Eastern on www.ztalkradio.com you can also download my show from the z talk show archives page. You can email your questions and comments to drdim@dimland.com

dimland radio 7-6-13 show notes

Dimland Radio’s Look At Sports

Two items here really. First was how ESPN Radio, the national shows anyway, seemed to be obsessed with NBA star Dwight Howard.  They talked about little else.  Seems as though they just didn’t care about the greatest game ever devised by man: baseball!

My second point on sports was about my home team the MN Twins being completely owned by the Hated Yankees.  The Twins regular season record against the Evil Empire since 2002 is 21-59.  That’s just sad.

A Merlins’ Tale

We have a family of merlins leaving in a tree across the street from us.  Merlins are birds, so relax, I’m not talking about tree-dwelling wizards.  Merlins are birds of prey and some local falconers came to check them out and one of them snatched a pair of the five chicks to raise for hunting.

It was very cool.

Never Found In The Eighties: Urgh! A Music War Week

Urgh! A Music War is a concert film that was released in 1982.  I first saw it in 1985 and thought it was awfully cool.  It features 30 plus New Wave, punk, post punk, and otherwise alternative bands from the late 70s and early 80s.  I did a week long series of Never Found in the 80s dedicated to this film.

I profiled the following bands:

The Fleshtones

An Atheist Monument In Florida

It’s the first of its kind in America and it’s way under the Bible Belt in the deep South in Florida.  It is a monument to atheism and it sits along side a monument to the Ten Commandments.  The American Atheists, having failed in getting the Ten Commandments removed from the public square, opted to erect a monument of their own.  A bench with quotes from noted atheists.

If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em.  Learn more about it here.

Saint Pope John Paul II?

The late Pope John Paul II is a sign off by the current Pope away from being a saint.  It is alleged that after John Paul II died he performed two miracles.  Two miracles is the minimum number need to become a saint.

One of the miracles was curing an old nun of her Parkinson’s disease.  Too bad his powers didn’t manifest themselves until after he died.  I can think of one person John Paul II might have liked to have cured of Parkinson’s while he was alive… John Paul II.

Oh well, the Catholic church can make whichever of its members a saint that it wishes.  It’s their club.

Oh, Norm…

Poor Norm MacDonald doesn’t believe in DNA or science in general.  (I think he confuses his ignorance for disbelief.)  However, he chooses to believe in an all-powerful, all-knowing being who loves us so much that he’ll send us to hell for not believing in him.

DNA (and science in general) have lots and lots of supporting evidence, while the Christians’ god (and all the other gods for that matter) have no supporting evidence.  You just have to have faith.

Kudos to Larry King (who interviewed Norm) for correctly pointing out that when scientists get something wrong it is the application of more science that corrects the mistake.  Not prayer or faith or wishful thinking.

Here is the clip of Larry King and Norm MacDonald.

Movie Recommendation
