No Mask And She Was Having A Bad Day
COVID is still a thing, y’all. And with the omicron variant peaking around America, plenty of people are still getting sick, hospitalized, and dead. The vast majority in the hospital and dead are unvaccinated, but the vaxxed and boosted can also get sick.
This is why masks are still needed to be worn when out in public. We still need to distance and it’s a good idea to limit trips to the store and to avoid crowds.
But, people are acting as though the pandemic is over. It ain’t.
A gas station/convenience store that I frequent causes me some frustration each time I go there to get a soda and a snack. No masks on the employees and most of the customers. Often I’m the only person in there wearing one. And no plexiglass partitions at the registers. I argh to myself every time I walk in there.
Hm. Perhaps I should limit my trips.
A recent visit had me arghing inside my brain at the no masks and no partition, and at the cashier, who is generally very pleasant and likes to call customers “bud”, who was maskless and apparently sick. COVID maybe?
But something happened. The cashier was having a bad day. My empathy rose and I realized she’s a human being and was in need of sympathy, not anger.
A Follow Up On A Pedantic Moment About QI
About a year ago, I had a pedantic moment about a claim made on the very funny and entertaining British panel show QI. A show of quite interesting facts about science, history, people, animals, and just about anything else you can think of.
In a video clip on QI’s YouTube channel, host Stephen Fry gave the depressing but interesting fact that more black 17 year olds in America are in prison than are in college. My pedantic response was that there aren’t many 17 year olds in college in America period. Most college freshmen in America are 18.
I also posted my pedantry on this claim on Facebook and received a few messages reminding me that America is a country of 50 experiments in democracy. (Until Fearless Loser is installed as king in 2024, that is.) States may have different rules than other states on minimum age requirements to start kindergarten. Which would affect the age of students starting college, assuming those students start college immediately after high school.
Minnesota, where I am from, might require children be 5 years old at the start of the school year to attend kindergarten, but other states might take 4 years old who are close to turning 5. Pennsylvania is such a state.
Facebook reminded me recently of that push back on my pedantry. So, I looked into it again. There are a couple states that will take 4 year olds, but most require the starting age to be 5. And it’s been that way since the 1970s.
Take that QI! I’m right!

Sigh. How Stupid?
Some of the conned supporters of future king Fearless Loser were not only stupid enough to take video and photos of themselves invading the US Capitol and then share them on social media, they were stupid enough to contact House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office to inquire about a lost and found. Some had left their phones or purses behind after the riot and they wanted to see if they could get the items back.
It was a great way to track these dumbass coup attempters.
Too Many Benefits Claimed And No Side Effects
Snake oil may be something many people think only exists in the Old West or maybe the Depression era. Some might think that we have advanced past those naive days. Well, those some, if they exist, are wrong.
CDB and toxin-leaching foot pads are both said to relieve stress, reduce anxiety, reduce pain, improve sleep, and to treat high blood pressure. CBD (a hemp oil concoction) is claimed to relieve migraines, fibromyalgia, digestive disorders, muscle spasms, PTSD; and to treat Parkinson’s Disease, multiple sclerosis, nausea, opioid addiction, and cancer in animals.
Toxin-leaching foot pads that turn black (due to sweat reacting with a chemical on the pad) when wore on feet overnight are claimed to have anti-aging benefits, to reduce back pain, and to treat diabetes; and they remove heavy metals while revitalizing weary bodies with new energy and boosting weakened immune systems.
Boy! What don’t these things do? Fix your car? Flare your pants? Make your out of style dress brand new?
One thing they don’t do is (pause for effect) any of those things I listed above. CBD has been shown to be helpful in treating young people with epilepsy. Otherwise this stuff looks just like snake oil and any effects are likely placebo.
Mick Jones of The Clash formed the band Big Audio Dynamite (B.A.D.) after leaving “the only band that matters” in 1983 and a brief stint as part of the ska band General Public. The opening track on B.A.D.’s debut album This Is Big Audio Dynamite (1985) is Medicine Show, written by Jones and fellow bandmate Don Letts. In its way the song is telling listeners to be skeptical of miracle products that seem to be able to treat or cure everything.
Cure alls generally aren’t.
