Wrong, But…

Did Elvis write his songs?

Last week I mentioned The Byrds didn’t play their own instruments on their first album, Mr. Tambourine Man. Apparently, they did. However, with the exception of Roger McGuinn, who went by Jim McGuinn at the time, the session musicians group The Wrecking Crew laid down the instrument tracks on the single… Mr. Tambourine Man.

Did The Beach Boys play on this album?

According to Wikipedia, people confused the single for the album. With both being named the same, it is an understandable mistake.

Still, to stand up for The Monkees, I have come up with two other examples that don’t get shit for either not writing their own songs or not playing their own instruments.

Stupid Meme Is Stupid

Last week I talked about the Cross/Bible door design. It’s probably not true that the six panel door was purposefully designed to look sort of like a cross floating above an open Bible. I didn’t have the strongest evidence to refute the claim, but it seems to not be true.

What I didn’t talk about on the show was the specific meme claiming liberals’ heads would explode when they learned of the Cross/Bible design. (I did write about in last week’s show notes.)

Why would liberals be bothered by this? Does the meme-maker not think it’s possible for liberals to be Christians? Have they not heard of Rev. Jesse Jackson? Pres. Jimmy Carter? Our current President? That Biden is a pretty devout Catholic.

Could the meme-maker have meant atheists? If so, I’ll quote what I wrote in last week’s show notes:

Dude, I live in Saint Paul. Christian bullshit is all over the place in this country. My head’s fine.

Our door has an upside down cross. Hail Satan!

It may be subtle, but it sure does look like an upside down cross, doesn’t it? Right wing Evangelicals’ heads exploding in 3…2…1…

I’m Not That Pedantic

Well, I am awfully pedantic, but I try to use my pedantry judiciously. I gave an example of how I didn’t allow my pedantic nature to ruin a friend’s story.

I knew what my friend meant when he quoted a drug dealer he used to know saying, “When transporting illegal substances: Commit one crime at a time.”

The one crime the dealer meant was the transporting of the drugs. In his way, he was saying don’t speed, don’t tailgate, don’t run red lights, etc. that will risk bringing the transporter to the attention of the Man! I held my tongue and kept from saying that when transporting drugs there are probably more than one crime being committed. However, another friend did not show the same restraint.

See? I’m not that pedantic.

And Now For A Few Pedantic Moments

Australia’s 60 Minutes

#1: The Australian version of the television news magazine 60 Minutes filed a report focusing on the events of January 6, 2021, also known as Insurrection Day. Or, as Fox News refers to it, the day a bunch of peaceful MAGA tourists were blamed for antifa storming the US Capitol. As the reporter set the scene with shots of rioters peacefully attacking Democracy, he got the chronology wrong.

Journalists need to be accurate.

#2: Fearless loser and modern, caring, sensitive, male Bill O’Reilly are conducting their Make American Democracy Die tour. Their stop in Florida apparently was not as well-attended as the two authoritarians would have liked. Ticket sales were lackluster. Prices were slashed and lower priced ticket buyers were upgraded. Pics and video of empty seats were shown on the news and social media.

Empty seats? Sure. But it looks like people are still filing in.

The images did show empty seats, but how long before the event were the pictures taken?

#3: The Monkees song What Am I Doing Hangin’ ‘Round is about a young man who has met the love of his life in Mexico, but he was too preoccupied with getting back to Texas to appreciate what he’d found. However, once he was back in Texas, he became preoccupied with going back to Mexico to be with his love. The turnaround happens in the third verse, but it doesn’t happen in the chorus.

I think it should.

I also made a few observations about the clip from the classic TV show of the band “playing” the song.

#4: At the ramp in which I occasionally park when picking up my wife from work, there is a message screen above the slot into which drivers put their tickets to open the gate in order to leave the ramp. When a driver has inserted their paid ticket the gate opens and the screen shows a smiley face with the message to drive safely. However, I’m not sure the emoji means it. Look for yourself.

Why are you winking?
