Cold Open Replay: It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

I decided that since it is Halloweentime I would replay the cold open I did years ago, commemorating the greatness of the Peanuts’ Halloween TV special: It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. It’s still my favorite holiday special and I can still hear those train whistles and exploding shells in the distance.
Boosters!
My parents got their Covid booster shots last week and so did my wife. I’ll be getting my booster this week. Once I’ve gotten that third jab, I might go maskless in public.
Might.
You can go to the Walgreens’ website and get yourself scheduled for the booster, too.
I also mentioned that the Pfizer Covid vaccine has gotten emergency use authorization from the FDA to be given to kids ages 5 to 11. Get ’em vaxxed!
The 2021 World Series Is In Full Swing
Normally, I am quite excited during the World Series, the greatest championship contest in all of sports. And I am somewhat enthused, but this year’s match-up has me conflicted. Do I root for the cheaters (Houston Astros) and the racially tone deaf (Atlanta Braves)?
I’ve reluctantly decided to halfheartedly cheer for the cheaters. First, there are only a few players left of the team caught cheating in 2017 season. Second, manager Dusty Baker was brought in to move the team past the scandal and put them on a more honest track. And, third, the Tomahawk Chop.

Throughout this postseason, any time I watched the Braves playing in their home park and I started to feel good about that team, the fans would start that horrible chant and I would remember, “Oh, right. That’s racist.” What’s worse is the chant is sanctioned by the team. The park entertainment folks would start up the chant with the rhythmic drumming piped in and the electronic display banners showing an animated tomahawk doing the chop. They even have a section in the ballpark called the Chop House and it’s sponsored by Coors Light.
It would be one thing if it was just the fans, but the team approves of and encourages the chop, MLB doesn’t step in to stop the chop, and Coors Light sponsors the racist chant.
For fuck’s sake, Atlanta! Pull your heads out of your asses! It’s been 30 years since Native Americans have made it clear the name of the team and the chant are an insult to a whole section of Americans. In 1991, during the World Series between the Braves and the Minnesota Twins, the greatest series ever, Native American groups protested the racism inherent in the name and the chant, but you didn’t listen then and you still aren’t listening. It’s been 30 years!

Yes, I know, Pres. Jimmy Carter did the chop as recently as 2003. He defended it in 1991. I’m not sure how he feels about it now. The Washington Redskins and the Cleveland Indians have moved away from the Native American stereotypes, it’s time for Atlanta to stop the chop. As this reporter opined last year, it makes the fans look like rubes.
So, I’m halfheartedly rooting for the Astros.
I Saw A Ghost Once

It must have been 1974 or 1975. I was 10 or 11 and one night I woke up from a dead sleep to see a human figure standing by the bedroom door. My younger brother and I shared a room then, but he didn’t see a thing. He was still sleeping.
I was certain a person was standing there and I cried out for my parents. They rushed in and turned on the light and POOF! the figure was gone. I’m pretty sure I was awake and it wasn’t a dream. My parents explained that our eyes can play tricks on us, especially in the dark and having just woken up.
It’s a good thing I have the sort of parents who thought of explanations for weird stuff that were of this world, not some kind of fantasy world of ghosts and such. What comfort is it to a kid for a parent to say, “Oooo, you saw a ghost! We live in a haunted house! You must be sensitive to the other world. Quick! Call Chip Coffey! We’ve got a kid to exploit!”?
Of course, Chip and his Psychic Kids weren’t a thing in the mid-70s. And thankfully they’re not a thing now.
It’s Halloween!
We have lots of candy in anticipation of a larger turnout than last year. We can get anywhere from 70 to 120 trick-or-treaters at our door, but during the pandemic (which is still a thing, y’all) Halloween we got 11. I was giving candy out by the handful!
And I picked up two very cool light projection image displays to creep out the kiddies.
One is a spooky tree, the other is a skeletal ghost. Both undulate to give the illusion of spectral floating. They are awesome!
It took some persistence and a bit of luck to get the ghost, but it was worth it!
