New Wipers, No Rain
Having waited long enough, I finally picked up and installed a new set of windshield wipers on our Kia Soul. Now, I’m just waiting for some rain to see how well they work.
Of course, It hasn’t rained.
A Dimland Radio Pedantic Moment: COVID Charts
I’m sure there is some criteria to placing the countries into specific categories of which I am unaware, but seeing these charts from endcoronavirous.com on MSNBC had me scratching my head.
Why are Jordan and Lebanon considered winners when clearly their numbers are going back up?

Why are Burkina Faso, Costa Rica, and especially Kyrgyzstan considered to be nearly there, meaning close to winning, when they too appear to have their cases going up?

And why is Ecuador considered to still be in trouble when its numbers are well down from their peak?

The other countries being included in their particular categories make sense. The ones I’ve pointed out seem anomalous. What is going on here? What information am I missing?
Mom Wants Out!
Minnesota’s governor Tim Walz, who has done an admirable job handling the COVID crisis, has announced a cautious reopening of the state. Over the next few weeks Minnesota will phase out of the shutdown, but people should still practice social distancing and continue to wear masks and wash their hands well and often.
My mom doesn’t think the reopening is going fast enough. She wants out of the house. Dad needs a haircut, dammit! And Mom wants to get back to the casinos!
Hmmm. Desperate to get back to the casinos… Should I be worried?
Cool Thing #1: Richard Wiseman Messes You Viewers

Richard Wiseman is a Professor for the Understanding of Psychology at Herfortshire in the UK. He is a cool dude who demonstrates how we really don’t know what we saw. Our eyes can play tricks on us. Our brains can be fooled.
Go to this link. Watch Richard make that wine glass on that small table disappear and reappear. How does he do it? But there’s even more trickery going on than a disappearing wine glass.

Cool Thing #2: MTV In The Internet Archive

Recently, I signed up to be able to access the Internet Archive (it’s free), so that I could watch the first few hours of MTV’s first day on the air – August 1, 1981. There is a video clip the runs four hours long. It is a very cool and fascinating time capsule. Mark Goodman was MTV’s first veejay and, despite some awkwardness, he does a fine job guiding viewers through a new concept in television entertainment: All music television in stereo!

Something I noticed watching those first hours of MTV: I really don’t care for much of the music. But I was enthused to learn The Who’s You Better You Bet was the fourth song to be played that first day of broadcasting. And that song would be played five times during that first day. An honor bestowed on only three artists that day.The other two were Phil Collin’s In The Air Tonight and April Wine’s Just Between You And Me.
The list of videos played that first day can be found here.
Be patient. Wash your hands. Stay home. Stay safe.
