dimland radio 10-21-23 show notes

From the night I spent with Dad at the hospital.

These show notes will be very brief.

On the show, I talked about my dad having a heart attack on Sunday, October 15th. At first, I thought he might have the flu or maybe COVID, but he wasn’t running a fever. In fact, his temperature was low. And, as it turned out, too low.

I made the right calls and he was sped off to the hospital.

One thing to be aware of: Heart attacks don’t necessarily look as dramatic as they do in the movies.

(There is a related message at the end of this blog.)

The Twins made the playoffs (there’s a certain hated team that did not, heh, heh) and they broke the longest postseason losing streak in all of North American sports (18 games in a row!). They won the American League Wild Card round by defeating the Toronto Blue Jays two games in a row in a best of three series.

My Twins then went down in the American League Division Series to the Houston Astros 3 games to 1 in a best of five series. (Houston was defeated in the American League Championship Series by the Texas Rangers.)

The World Series begins Friday. The Rangers will be taking on the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Go, Texas!

Notice anything about this list?

All time? ALL TIME?!

More like the best TV shows of the last 25 years.

No M*A*S*H?! Really?!

This list is complete bullshit.

My dad. The man, the legend.

Emergency surgery got the blood flowing through his heart, but his body just wasn’t going to recover.

Tuesday, October 24th, we lost our dad.

I lost my hero.

Yes, the show has been very sporadic for a while now. It’s been an interesting year or two. But, Dimland Radio will be going on another short hiatus. It will resume November 11th and, hopefully, I’ll get back to a more consistent weekly schedule.

dimland radio 9-30-23 show notes

After waiting seven weeks, we finally have internet at my dad’s place.! Yay!!!

CenturyLink, our former internet provider, can schedule an appointment to install our portal to the world wide web. They just can’t keep that appointment. My wife took a day off of work needlessly. I lost eight hours of work for Nostalgia Zone (see ad below).

Will they offer us anything other than an obligatory “we’re sorry for any inconvenience”?

Another internet provider got us hooked up within four days of our signing on to their service. See how easy that was, CenturyLink?

It’s a show on broadcast TV that helped my wife and I through the no internet horror from which we have just recently emerged. It’s shown on Court TV when the there ain’t any court show on.

The stories told by the survivors themselves are quite harrowing. Especially, the stories of people surviving attempted murder. The show may not be for everyone, but I enjoy it.

One episode featured a survivor, who wasn’t religious and didn’t credit God for getting him out of a situation that God didn’t prevent in the first place. Amen, brother! Preach it!

Bill O’Reilly is spinning in his grave!

Hm? What’s that? O’Reilly’s not dead? Huh.

September 16, 2023.

And I was Best Man!

It was wonderful and Leslie, the bride, was lovely (if terrified). Steve (my brother) forgot his cell phone was… (I elaborated on the show.)

And I was Best Man!

A couple years ago, the St. Paul Pioneer Press published a supplement in one of its Sunday editions, which featured a retrospective of photographs that have appeared in its pages over the decades. The photo above is one of them, originally posted in June, 1942. See that little boy in the overalls with a note pinned to it? The boy in the middle of the group? The boy in the red circle!!!

That’s my uncle Ralph!

He was about 8 at the time. He’s still among the living, making his home in Fremont, California. He and his daughter Jeannie came to town to attend Steve’s wedding.

And I really have to thank my cousin. I had only thought of getting a picture of Uncle Ralph holding that old image, but Jeannie had the fantastic idea of taking the pictures on that very spot. Brilliant!

Thanks, Jeannie and Uncle Ralph!

That’s the spot! More or less.
He has changed a bit! Well, maybe a little taller.

dimland radio 9-9-23 show notes

Very tame, but it shows more than I remembered. And the model practiced the same personal grooming that the young people do today. So I’m told! Ahem! How would I know such things?

This past weekend, while working at Nostalgia Zone (see ad below), I opened up one of the many, many, many boxes of stuff we have yet to go through. I discovered two old Playboy magazines from 1960.

I was shocked! SHOCKED!

By the decided lack of naked lady pictures.

It’s a treasure hunt and a murder game that turns from an admittedly sadistic yet still harmless game into an actual who done it. It’s The Last Of Sheila!

I think it’s a lot of fun and James Coburn is fantastic as the wealthy, mean, cruel, sadistic movie producer making his gang of Hollywood hopeful sycophants jump through hoops to gain his favor and maybe a big job in the movies. There are unexpected twists and plenty of satirical jabs, most of which come from Coburn’s character.

According to the Google, it is available to stream on Apple TV, Amazon Prime, and Vudu.

Check it out!

James Coburn as Clinton Greene in The Last Of Sheila

I’m not crazy! I have a friend who, unprompted by me, said, “I think Coburn would have made an incredible live-action Grinch.”

The Grinch as Santy Claus.

See?!

That’s me (on the left) and the Chris Brown about to take of for the exotic land called Fargo!

It was only for lunch. For a couple hours. But what a blast it was to fly there.

Thanks, Chris!

Read it and do it!

It’s a common complaint here in Minnesota. Some drivers just don’t get the concept that the passing lane is for passing. The recent Road Trip with 2 Chicks reminded me that some Minnesotans just don’t want to move right for faster traffic. It’s weird. Drivers in the other states we drove through seemed to get it.

Just watch Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones in the done-on-the-cheap video for Start Me Up. He mugs, he struts, he herky jerks like a chicken with a bad case of hemorrhoids. He looks silly, especially if you watch the video with the sound on mute.

Pete Townshend of The Who on the other hand…

Ok. I might be a tad biased.

dimland radio 9-2-23 show notes

My wife, her best friend, and I went on a road trip to Colorado. The main reason was to see Duran Duran play at the legendary outdoor music venue Red Rocks, but we took in a few other sites and did a few things. (For more details, listen to the show, goshdurnit!)

I won’t be writing much, because, if it’s true that a picture is worth a thousand words, I have 18,000 words for you.

OK, I might add some words in the captions.

The adventure begins…
“I’m fine. Really.”
North Platte, NE
These big guys are all over America.
“What did you do?”
My Honey Bunny and me going for a ride.
We made it to Golden, CO.
My Honey Bunny and me again.
Dinosaur tracks! The coolest part of the trip.
More tracks.
The legendary Niles Rogers and his band Chic at Red Rocks.
It rained a bit, but we were prepared.
The main attraction: Duran Duran
Red Rocks was pretty damn cool!
During the show, I may not have mentioned we went to a comic book store, but we did.
Last night of the Road Trip with 2 Chicks was capped off at Coors Field watching the Colorado Rockies host the Atlanta Braves.
My Honey Bunny and me at the ballgame.
Back home and reunited with our little girl.

The pictures say it all. (Well, most of it anyway.)

dimland radio 8-19-23 show notes

Wednesday my dad and I went grocery shopping. I drove. Dad pushed the cart through the store. He did get awfully tired about 2/3 the way through and sat out the rest of the shopping trip. I got him home and he admitted to being more tired than he expected.

I thought he might think about how difficult it would be to get in and out of his car, while using his walker, getting his walker in the backseat, and himself in the driver’s seat; then getting to where he needed to go, get himself and his walker out of the car…

Seems like a pretty daunting task.

Undaunted, Thursday he drove himself to the casino. Then on Saturday evening, he drove himself to church.

Sigh.

I had at least this many!

It was at least 20 years ago when I started collecting “lucky pennies”. Pennies found on the ground (mostly), but I would also find some in the couch cushions, under the car seat, in the laundry, etc. If the pennies weren’t handed to me as change from a cash purchase, into the luck penny jar they would go.

So, I decided it was time to cash them in for real paper money.

$6.31.

Money well earned, time well spent.

He never presented his plan to improve America’s infrastructure. He never presented his great plan to replace Obamacare. Both of which he would constantly promise the plans would be revealed in two to three weeks. Always two to three weeks (or maybe a month) away, but never presented.

He didn’t finish the wall. And Mexico didn’t pay for what little wall did get built. He didn’t lock up Hillary Clinton. He completely botched the American response to the pandemic. He then lost a shit ton of jobs. (I should acknowledge jobs were created at a good pace before the pandemic. That’s why, if not for the pandemic, Trump would likely have been re-elected. Every cloud has a silver lining.)

Sleepy Joe?

Thanks, Joe!

But maybe some Trumpers are seeing the light. This one seems to be having his eyes opened.

I just learned there’s a podcast called Help! I Sexted My Boss. From what I can tell, listeners write in about embarrassing events hoping for advice. The hosts are British, so I’m sure their advice sounds good. Is it sound, though? I dunno.

On one episode, the last letter read was about a woman claiming she had found her mother’s vibrating sex toy and used it. She loved because it hit all the right places. And she was stunned when she discovered the device had been made from a mold of her father’s penis.

My immediate reaction was that the story was bullshit. But was it?

It might be true. I mean, Clone-A-Willy is a thing that is real.

This is a real product that people can buy and use. Or their kids can use.
