The Show Is On Hiatus

We’ve had the tragic event of having our Mac laptop decide not to work anymore. This means that, until we replace the laptop, I won’t be doing a show for a while. I hope to not be away for too long.

I figured that I could still post here and address some of the topics I would have covered on the show. So, this is my no show show notes…

Angelina Jolie Removes More Organs

What lengths some people will go to to lose weight!

All kidding aside, the actor, director, ambassador, and serial child adopter Angelina Jolie was in the news again recently. She announced that she along with her doctors decided that she should have her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed in order to prevent ovarian cancer. You will recall that a couple years ago Jolie was in the news for opting to have both her breasts removed in order to avoid breast cancer.

She made these decisions based on her genetic makeup putting her at a high risk of developing those cancers. This is an extreme version of an ounce of prevention thinking, but I’m certain her doctors had given her their best advice and she had carefully considered her actions.

I’ve seen there has been concern that other people might follow her example with their bodies, but I gotta figure those people’s doctors won’t do these procedures lightly. Doctors take an oath to do no harm and their licensing boards would be none too happy if doctors cross the line. Although, there is that Burzynski qua… er… doc… er… fellow.

Ok, here’s my easy joke that I’m probably not the first to make:

So, Angelina Jolie has had her breasts and ovaries removed because she is genetically at high risk of breast and ovarian cancer. I sure hope she doesn’t find out she’s also at high risk for brain cancer.

Woman Has Seizure And Dies After Acupuncture Treatment

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think acupuncture is safe and effective. I think it is a superstitious practice that has no basis in reality. It’s just the placebo effect.

However, Tim Farley of What’s The Harm, Skeptic History, and Skeptools had posted a story of a 29 year-old woman in Hong Kong having a seizure and later dying after having an acupuncture treatment. I cannot find anything that states that the acupuncture was what led to the seizure. She could easily have had the seizure while on the bus on the way to get the treatment.

What this is an example of is post hoc reasoning. The woman had a treatment which science has shown to be useless and unproven and, then, she had a seizure and later died; therefore it must be the treatment that caused her death. We have to remember that correlation does not mean causation.

I know Tim Farley knows that. I’ve heard him say What’s The Harm isn’t scientific, but I wouldn’t have gone with the story without stating that it isn’t yet known if the acupuncture was responsible. Farley may have done just that and I may have missed it.

Faith-healer Benny Hinn Hospitalized

Believe me, the irony of this story did not pass the notice of skeptics.

Benny Hinn has made his name and his considerable fortune by his “faith healing” theatrics. Perhaps you’ve seen videos of this televangelist tapping people on their foreheads and their collapsing at the power of Jesus following through the charlat… er… good reverend. I’ve even seen clips of him just waving his hands at the gathered suck… er… faithful and they all fall over. Such power he has.

Well, the faithful at Hinn’s sideshow have been conditioned as to how to react when the good mounteb… er… man of God does his act. They may be caught up in the moment and their faith that they actually feel his power of Jesus in his waving hands.

However, Benny the faith-healer doesn’t seem to be able to cure his male pattern baldness or, more importantly, his heart condition. A condition that recently required a stay at the hospital.

Another easy and certainly made by others joke:

Faith-healer, heal thyself.

A Brunch With Atheists

So, recently I went to a meet-up of Minnesota Atheists. It was at a restaurant that I had never been to before and Google maps may have got me to the ballpark, it didn’t get me to my seat. I ended up being a bit later than I figured I’d be.

There were about have a dozen folks there and they were all quite nice as they brunched on a course of dead babies. (That’s what atheists eat, you know.) There was talk about the old drive-in movie theaters, doing live radio, and a couple “get out of hell free” cards were handed out.

They seem like a likable enough bunch. And the roasted baby?  Deeee-lish!

Dog Attack

There Hayden and I were, minding our own business, in our living room one weekend afternoon, when we heard the horrible sound of two dogs fighting and a woman crying for help. It was a neighbor lady who was walking her Husky puppy when a unleashed Black Lab attacked. I ran out to assist. I really didn’t do much, but I was there and did what I could.

Car Crash

Just this past Tuesday (St. Patrick’s Day), my family was awaken by the sound of a car crashing just outside our house. We thought it hit our van, but it crashed into the tree on the boulevard next to the van.

I related the story of three very scared young people, a crashed car, an angry and yet apologetic man with a sawed off shotgun, and me in my pajamas. No one was hurt, but the car was totaled and the I’m not sure if the gun-wielding man was ever found.

The mother of one of those three young people told me that the kids think I saved their lives. They believe that my being there prevented the fellow from killing them. I think they are being a tad over dramatic.

I really didn’t do much, but I was there and did what I could.

Patriarchy!

I finished talking about what a good guy I am. Someone willing to help and at all. I built up that good will and then I went and jeopardized that it by letting it be known that I think the Gender Wage Gap is bullshit. It’s based on a misleading statistic that makes it appear that women get paid 77 cents for every dollar a man earns.

From what I can find on this, it seems obvious that this simply isn’t true. Check here and here to get the skinny. But, if I am wrong and those sources are bogus, let me know. Email me at drdim@dimland.com.
There Is Another Gender Gap

But, there is another gender gap that we don’t hear about. It is a statistic in which women are grossly underrepresented. Of every 100 workers affected in this statistic, only eight are women.

The statistic is workplace related deaths. Shall we call for an equalizing of that gender gap?

dimland radio 3-14-15 show notes

5 Years!

I have been doing this show for five year! It’s hard to believe I’ve managed to think of something most every week. I say most, because there were a couple few week’s a didn’t do a show, but let’s not get bogged down in details.
I’ve done 224 shows in those five years. That doesn’t include the 30 plus music only shows I did back when Z Talk Radio had the license to play music by signed artists. Boy, those music shows were fun, but without license. I don’t need to go into the details, do I?

In five years I have interviewed a handful of people. Not many, but I did get to talk to George Hrab and Ben Radford.

Will the show last another five years? Will I ever have another guest? Will I ever have more than two listeners? Will I ever get it on iTunes?

Stayed tuned.

Scooby Doo & In Search Of…

I reminded my two listeners that the first skeptical topic I address on that first show was the cartoon ‘Scooby Doo, Where Are You?’ It was the introduction to skepticism for a lot of kids in the late 60s and 70s. The g-g-ghost never turned out to be an actual ghost. It was always some person pulling a scheme of one sort or another.

I also mentioned In Search Of.. That was the credulous show which “investigated” the unknown and unexplained. It was the forerunner and template setter of all those mystery-mongering shows that are so plentiful on cable.

In the day, I lapped up the nonsense that host Leonard Nimoy delivered with such a straight face and no hint of irony. What a great actor he was.

When I watch In Search Of… now I’m far less impressed by the bullshit, but I still like the show so much. Oh, well. Chalk it up to the duality of man.

Vaccination In The Courts

Two stories in the news about vaccines in the courts. In Germany, a biologist, Stefan Lanka, had issued a challenge with an award of 100,000 euro to anyone who could demonstrate that measles is caused by a virus and is not psychosomatic as he believes it to be. A Germany doctor provided the evidence and claimed the prize. Lanka refused to pay. The case went to court and the court found that Lanka needed to pay up.

In America, the US Court of Federal Claims, after studying three test cases of claims that vaccination was causing autism, has found that the evidence does not support a causal connection. This is good news as science has long maintained that autism is not caused by vaccines or the mercury that has not been in most vaccines for years.

Kinda Busy

I related that I’ve been a bit busy lately. I’m writing blogs for Stuck In The 80s, I’m going to start blogging for the Nostalgia Zone, I have a forward to write for a friend’s graphic novel, and there’s a special podcast that has just been released (after I did this show) that I’ll talk more about next week. Plus I have a couple art projects that I need to get done.

But you can listen to that episode of Assault of the 2-Headed Space Mules right now! And you can read my latest Never Found piece by going here.

Playlists On YouTube

I have been trying out the playlist option on my channel at YouTube. So far I’ve put to playlists together. One is of Pete Townshend songs that might not be as well know and the other is a list of songs that were played at First Avenue on their Club Degenerate nights.

I talked a bit about my days hanging out at First Avenue of those Club Degenerate nights. There were unusual people who would hang on there as well as the occasional appearances of the Fuckin’ Shit Biscuits that could be quite fun. Noisy and messy, but fun.

A Tale Of Art School

I used to do some fairly violent or weird doodles on the tabletops of the art school I attended years ago. One day I ran afoul of the art history teacher who took issue of one of my doodles depicting a woman bending over backward. The teacher looked past the violent imagery I had drawn, because those involved men. And she didn’t object to the phallic images that might have shown up doodled by other students. I wasn’t the only doodler.

But that bent over woman, apparently bent her out of shape. She gave me a talking to after class in the common room as students passed by. I don’t remember my initial reaction, but I did do a write up voicing my concern of the double standard.

By that I mean, my design class had just gone to see a German Expressionist exhibit at one of the local museums. Fellow students and the instructor directed my attention to one particular artist whose work my doodles resembled. The artist was Otto Dix. So, I made the point in my written protest that Dix hangs in a museum while I get shit.

dimland radio 3-7-15 show notes

58 Years!

I stopped by my parents’ place last week on what was their 58th wedding anniversary. What’s their secret to a long marriage? I’m not sure, but Dad was watching TV in the living room and eating his supper, while Mom was in the den watching TV and eating her supper.
Ahhh, love.

Created?

There’s an ad for a weight loss clinic and an ad for the weather guy on the local TV news. Both have something in common: the both feature a person using the word “created” instead of “born”. I found that usage odd.
Perhaps, it’s my atheism and it’s a Christian thing.

What Color Is That Dress?

It looks white/gold to me, but it’s really blue/black. Apparently, it’s an optical illusion. I am willing to accept that, but I have to admit, part of me still wants to fight for it being white/gold. Maybe it’s the same kind of dress made with the same pattern and materials, but it’s actually white with gold trim and the other dress is blue with black.
I used the whole thing as an example that our brains and eyes can fool us. One Facebook friend took exception with my suggesting people don’t really know what they see at all times.
Well, click here and here to learn more about this particular optical illusion.

Pedantic Moment: What’s Your Sleep Number?

I know one thing about Sleep Number Beds: the number ends in either a 5 or a 0. Recently, I saw an ad for one of the womens’ daytime talk shows (I don’t remember which). It was promoting the appearance of some actress (I don’t remember who) who is a spokesperson for the Sleep Number Bed. She said her number was 45 and one of the hosts got all excited and said hers was 47. She said they were practically Sleep Number twins. Nope. 7 is not a 5 or a 0.
Note the numbers.
Conservative talk show host Laura Ingraham (this was a few years ago) would do live reads of Sleep Number Bed ads on her radio show. She said she loved her Sleep Number Bed and that her number was 73 (I don’t remember the exact number, but it didn’t end in a 5 or a 0). Nope.
She did eventually give a number that ended properly. The sponsor must have heard her and corrected her mistake.
Bill Nye The Science Guy Changes His Mind

As all of us should do, when presented with the facts, although they may contradict our beliefs, it behooves us to change our minds. Scientists, especially, must be willing to do this and the Science Guy learned more about genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and changed his position.
Nye had opposed GMOs mainly do to what could have been detrimental environmental effects. One of his concerns is the loss of milkweed, which is bad for Monarch Butterflies as milkweed is their food.
He met with the scientists of Monsanto, the most hated corporation in the world, taking over for Halliburton since the end of the Bush administration. They showed him what the science says about GMOs. Nye was convinced to change his position.
Of course, his change of heart has just given the GMO/Monsanto conspiracy theorists a new enemy. They, not surprisingly and very predictably, now think that the Science Guy got bought off by that evil corporation. Or, perhaps, pressured into changing his mind.
Dimland Radio Science Hero: Jimmy Kimmel Again

Kimmel is the first two time recipient of the coveted status of Dimland Radio Science Hero. Recently, in his opening monolog, he used humor to decry the wrongheadedness of parents with refuse to vaccinate their kids. He was smart enough to know his audience shouldn’t just listen to a talk show host so he played a PSA put together by his show of actual doctors advocating the use of vaccines. It’s pretty funny and it has the science right.
Kimmel also deserves this second awarding, because he won’t back down. He’s had some fun with those who have disagreed with his stance.

Congratulations, Jimmy Kimmel!

The Grey Lady Camera Glitch

So, the Daily Mail and other online tabloids have run with a story with a photo that is said to be the Grey Lady ghost of Hampton Court Palace in the UK. When I first saw the image, I thought it was probably some glitchy artifact of photography. Shortly after I made that comment on a friend’s posting of the story, I spotted this explanation.

It appears my guess was correct. Of course, it is possible Metabunk’s explanation of an artifact of the panorama photo option is not what actually happened. But it is the best explanation that makes the least amount of assumptions. So which explanation would Occam’s Razor favor: an artifact of photography or a ghost?

These Artists Better Have Worked For Free

It’s sad the state of some of the art that is out there. The website SadandUseless.com has compiled a selection of actual book covers of actual books (no doubt self-published) on Amazon. They are horrible. One is ok and could work with a tweaking of the title font ( the book titled ‘Disbelief’), but the rest are shit. I sure hope none of those artists were paid.

It brought to mind a story of something my very talented friend Scott Roberts encountered when bidding on a freelance project. The project was to do 78 full color illustrations for a deck of tarot cards. Scott bid accordingly and then haggled with the person taking the bid.

The person offering the work ended up taking someone else’s bid of FIVE DOLLARS per illustration! That is insane! Scott whipped up an example of what five dollars would get from him. Scott didn’t still have the one he fired off back then, but he whipped up a close approximation for me (see below).

Here’s your five dollars worth.
Now, before you think Scott isn’t worth more than five bucks for a full color illustration…

I’d say at least 15 bucks!

SNL Turned 40

I turned 50 and Saturday Night Live turned 40. Coincidence?!

I guess not.

Anyway, I talked about some of the highlights and having my 11 year-old son taking in a few skits and jokes that may not have been suitable for someone his age. In fact, the first skit ‘Celebrity Jeopardy‘ was filled with moments my son shouldn’t have been privy to. I’m such a bad parent.

I also mentioned the funniest moment was an ESPN skit of which my wife and I didn’t catch a word. We were struck into a laughing jag by the look on Will Forte’s face. You can watch that clip here.

I mentioned being pleasantly surprised by Molly Cyrus’ redition of ’50 Ways to Leave Your Lover’. Her voice was deeper than I expected and it didn’t seem as though she lip-synced or was autotuned. She ought to release the song as a single. It might be a hit and be taken more seriously than her other music.

I also got into Victoria Jackson’s nutballery. I never thought she was that funny, but recently she’s gotten into posting her nutty, conservative ideas online. She has a problem with Pres. Obama and is convinced he is Muslim. She ought to be reminded that the US Constitution has no religious requirement in regards to who may be president. Perhaps she’s just pulling an excellent Poe.

It’s Not True: JFK Is Not A Jelly Donut

Pres. Kennedy did not declare himself to be a jelly donut in a speech he gave in Berlin in 1963. When he said, “Ich bin ein Berliner,” he had the grammar correct and none of the Germans there thought he had goofed up.

Here is an article detailing on how the idea that he called himself a pastry is not true.

The Oscars Were…Meh

I talked a bit about the Oscars and how Neil Patrick Harris was ok, but his jokes fell a bit flat Overall he did the best he could with the material he had. I expected more. He did a great job with the opening number, though.

I talked about Joan Rivers and others being left out of the In Memoriam segment. And I also mentioned my surprise at Lady Gaga being able to sing. Who knew? Her fans, I would guess.

More Bullshit On The Internet. No. Really?

Facebook friend, fellow ZTalker, and conspiracy theorist Kale Kelly posted a story through his Skeptical Edge Facebook page. The Skeptical Edge is an internet radio program Kale hosts with Joe Couto and is returning soon to Z Talk Radio.

The story he posted seems to be a variation of the stolen kidney urban legend. I called him on it and he got all up in my grill about how I poop the party, I don’t do my research (by which he means I don’t get my information from his favored sources), and that Snopes isn’t all that.

I let him know that none of the major news site carried the story. And that the only ones that did seemed to me to be tabloids such as The Daily Mail (Fail). That seemed henky to me. Add those factors to the urban legend of organ stealing and I felt confident in called it bullshit.

Now, I will mention Snopes. Here’s their take.

Movie Recommendation: The Train (1964)

United Artists

As recommended to me by friend of the show Kitty Mervine, I found this to be a pretty good WWII movie about a group of French Resistance fighters struggling to keep a train filled with masterworks of art from being brought from France to Germany.

It stars Burt Lancaster and Paul Scofield and was directed by John Frankenheimer. It is available on YouTube, but the video quality is a bit faded and the film has been sped up just a little, so the characters have an Alvin and the Chipmunks sound to them. Otherwise, it’s worth a watch.
