I Hate This Song, But…

Last week I mentioned that I hate the song Amazing Grace. I decided to elaborate a bit on my hatred of the song. Mainly I hate it when it is sung with no musical accompaniment and I don’t mind the song when played on bagpipes as an instrumental.

But, then I saw ABC Nightly News do a profile on Lori Marie Key, a Michigan nurse who sings Amazing Grace during shift changes at her hospital while dealing with the Covid pandemic. A video of her singing the song went viral (no pun intended) last March and she was invited to sing at the Covid memorial that was televised the night before the Inauguration. (Joe Biden won! There was no steal.)

Don’t get me wrong, I still hate the song, but ABC included a photo montage of frontline healthcare personnel dealing with the pandemic and I got the feels.

In my talk I mentioned this amusing moment from the classic sitcom WKRP In Cincinnati.

A Friend’s Downplaying Of The Pandemic

Also on last week’s show was my friend who was downplaying the Covid. He implied it was merely a really bad cold with a high survival rate. I pointed out his numbers were wrong and I explained that survival just means people didn’t die. There are lingering health problems, some quite horrible.

Since that show he had responded, he was incredulous that I would suggest he implied that everyone was OK once the Covid had left their systems. (I quote his first comment on my Facebook thread: “I keep surviving Covid… Almost like it was a really bad cold with a 99.98% survival rate.” I sense an implication there, don’t you?) And he let me know he, his wife, and two of his kids had Covid.

Fortunately, they all recovered. Unfortunately, my friend came out with a what’s the big deal? attitude. Much like his favorite president after he had recovered from the Covid.

I took the opportunity to read a list of famous people who had died from Covid in 2020. And my list wasn’t complete.

And there is Minnesotan Glenn Vierling age 74. He was just released from the hospital to a recovery center after a 70 day stay battling Covid, much of which was spent in the ICU and in a coma. While Mr. Vierling was in the hospital, his wife had a month’s stay of her own in another hospital. She also had Covid!

But as my friend downplayed, “[Covid is] almost like a really bad cold with a 99.98% survival rate.”

Sigh.

Dana Gould And Amy Miller Don’t Know God Doesn’t Exist

Comedian Dana Gould has an excellent podcast and on the most recent episode his guest was comedian Amy Miller. Amy has her own podcast called Who’s Your God. She has comedic guests on to discuss their religious beliefs or disbeliefs, as the case may be.

On Dana’s show the two expressed the idea that atheists hear all the time. “Atheists might not believe in God, but they don’t know God doesn’t exist.”

This is true.

However, I could counter by saying to them, “Well, you don’t know Zeus doesn’t exist.”

Switching out one dubious god for another makes the statement seem less of a gotcha, doesn’t it?

I suggest they look into Bertrand Russell’s orbiting teapot.

By the way, Dana Gould is an atheist.

Friendly Fire Came To An Abrupt End

One of my favorite podcasts hadn’t dropped a new episode in a few weeks and I was beginning to wonder what was going on. Did I unsubscribe? Did they make it a pay to listen podcast? Were they taking a belated holiday break? Their last show dropped January 1st.

The podcast is Friendly Fire. Each week, the three hosts review a war movie and I really enjoyed the show. The chemistry of the three hosts (Benjamin Harrison, Adam Pranica, and John Roderick) was evident and very enjoyable.

While I awaited a new episode, I listened to the aforementioned Dana Gould Hour. During which Dana and Amy touched on cancel culture and Amy mentioned that John Roderick had run afoul of Twitter.

“Huh? John Roderick did what now?” I asked.

Then a new Friendly Fire dropped. It was a three minute episode with just the producer telling the listeners the show was over.

A Google search clued me in on why. Roderick was given the name #BeanDad for his alleged mistreatment of his 9 year old daughter, which he chronicled in a series of tweets. The harrowing tale of teaching his daughter how to use a can opener had upset the internet. And, because the internet is forever, some very questionable earlier tweets by Roderick were found. Of those older tweets, he claimed ironic and sarcastic use of racial, homophobic, and anti-Semitic slurs.

Yikes!

As my wife said about Roderick’s explanation, “Twitter does not do sarcasm.”

A Cool (If Disturbing And Terrifying) Thing: Night Stalker: The Hunt For A Serial Killer

My wife texted me the other day telling me she was watching Night Stalker. I was stunned. “She hates that show,” I thought.

But I gave it some more consideration. I asked her, “Carl Kolchak or Richard Ramirez?”

It was the latter. And it’s a four part true crime documentary series on Netflix. It is fascinating and horrifying. That Ramirez was messed up.

Ah, The 1950s. So Much Patriarchy

Speaking of Darren McGavin (he played Carl Kolshak of TV’s Kolchak: The Night Stalker), I stumbled across an early moment in his acting career. It’s the 1955 short film A Word To Wives. It’s an amusing, if unintended, look at the patriarchy of 1950s America.

From what I gather, the film was sort of an infomercial to promote the wonders of the modern conveniences of the new houses of 1955. Housewife Jane was envious of her friend’s new house, especially the kitchen. If only her husband George (Darren McGavin) would buy a new house. Jane’s friend cooks up a scheme to get George interested in making an upgrade.

Oh, the patriarchy! It’s laid on so thick, you can cut it with a knife.

Inauguration Day. Finally.

America has a new president. It feels good to have an adult in charge again. And he has a lot of work to do.

I gave a few of my reactions to the inauguration ceremony and that night’s celebration. There were plenty of highlights. I mentioned being pleased the former vice president Mike Pence attended, instead of seeing off his former boss as he and his wife slinked off early in the morning. (I stated that departure is how a loser loses.)

I also enjoyed seeing three of our surviving former presidents also in attendance. And seeing Minnesota’s own Sen. Amy Klobuchar having such a prominent role made me quite proud. The poem by Amanda Gorman was wonderful and inspiring, as was Pres. Joe Biden’s speech.

I could have done without all the references to God and the singing of Amazing Grace by Garth Brooks. Not because I’m not a fan of Brooks, which I’m not, it’s because I really hate that song and always have. I just hate it.

And with having an adult in charge again, an adult who accepts science, means America can get to work getting a handle on the pandemic and implement a Federal roll-out plan for the vaccine. The previous administration couldn’t be bothered. They were too busy pushing The Big Lie about the election being stolen, when not golfing that is. This also means the welcome return of an obviously relieved Dr. Fauci.

*“Ah, to be listened to and not have to fear being uncut by stupid.”*

Lastly, the person who really stole the show, albeit unintentionally, was Sen. Bernie Sanders. His coat, his mittens, and that photograph of him sitting on his own set the internet on fire. The memes created of Bernie reminded us that the internet can be fun.

A Dimland Radio Pedantic Moment: That Life Expectancy Thing Again

*Mo Rocca doesn’t understand life expectancy.*

Just because average life expectancy in 18th and 19th centuries was about 40, doesn’t mean 39 year olds were at death’s doorstep. There were plenty of older folks about, folks that made it into their 60s, 70s, 80s, and even 90s. Mo Rocca, in one of his profiles of the American presidents, perpetuates the notion that a life expectancy of 39 years meant that William Henry Harrison taking office at age 68 was like being 110 today.

No, it was like being to 68 today.

Incidentally, Harrison took ill shortly after being sworn in and died 31 days into his presidency.

I discussed the reasons for short life expectancies back in the day and gave the ages at which our more well-known Founding Fathers died. With the exception of Alexander Hamilton, who was killed in a dual with Aaron Burr at age 47 or 49, none of the Fathers died younger than 67 (George Washington). John Adams died at age 90.

And don’t think those politicians, all wealthy men, got the best health care. Doctors back then were still trying to figure out what worked in medicine. Sometimes not seeing a doctor was the safer bet. Just ask Pres. James Garfield…

The Assassination Of James Garfield

On July 2, 1881, Pres. James Garfield was shot twice by assassin Charles Guiteau. It took until September 19, 1881 for the president to die. Not so much from his wounds, more from the care he received from doctors who didn’t think using an antiseptic to clean their hands and instruments was necessary or helpful.

It was a harrowing and gruesomely slow death. When Garfield finally died, Guiteau stated, “Yes, I shot him, but his doctors killed him.”

That Has Always Been Wrong

Throughout history, no matter how enlightened people may have thought of themselves, the majority could really have some troubling blind spots when it comes to race.

I watched an episode of The Good Life (called Good Neighbors in the States), a very popular TV comedy in the UK in the 1970s. During the episode Away From It All, the character Margo can be seen wearing an apron with a very problematic design.

The design is a character know as the Robertson’s golliwog. And it is racist as hell!

We see that now, but at the time the majority, thinking that they certainly weren’t racists, didn’t notice any problem. We have gotten better, but we still have a ways to go.

My Prediction From 2019 Didn’t Come True, Thankfully

Way back in December of 2019 I predicted that Pres. Trump would be the only American president to be impeached, acquitted, and re-elected. Turns out I was wrong. Phew!

Yes, he was impeached (he had been at the time I made the prediction) and he was later acquitted by the Republican-controlled Senate, who had thought Fearless Loser had learned his listen. (Scoff). I was wrong about him being re-elected. That’s the one silver lining of the pandemic.

Had he shown even half-assed competency in his handling of the pandemic….

Well, he is the man-child he is, so of course he fucked it up.

Even though I had called for it several times throughout 2020, I had not predicted he would have been impeached a second time. As we all know now, he has been impeached a second time. So much winning! And, yes, we can’t stand it.

On last week’s show I talked about the reason for his impeachment. Fearless Loser had spent months setting up his eventual loss as being due to fraud. And when he did lose he and his enablers cried fraud, fraud, fraud and his conspiracy theorist followers believed him. And on January 6, some of the more rabid Trumpers stormed the US Capitol building.

Had he been able to accept the loss and concede to Joe Biden, the Trumpers would have slinked back into their holes and he would have avoided a second impeachment…

Well, he is the man-child is, so of course he fucked it up.

But Were His Actions Impeachable?

Of course, I think Fearless Loser’s actions on and leading up to January 6 are impeachable, but I’m not an expert. I’ll let YouTuber Legal Eagle make the case.

And Legal Eagle additionally points out that Trump’s attempt to strong arm Georgia’s secretary of state to “find” 11,780 votes can also be considered an impeachable offense.

Can we impeach him again, again?

And Then There’s These Dipshits

They drove past masses of soldiers and police and barricades all around Washington DC. They walked past National Guard troops stationed inside their workplace. All those troops and cops in place to protect against further attacks by delusional Trumpers.

They walked into the House chamber and argued against impeachment. They said, “What about antifa?” They cried witch hunt. They did whatever they could to convince themselves the president’s actions were not impeachable. They were the 197 Republicans who voted against impeachment.

Pathetically partisan. At least, ten Republicans could put the Constitution and the country before party.

And The QAnoners Continue Their Nuttery

The most recoganizable Trumper involved in the attack, the Grand Poohbah of the Royal Order of the Water Buffalo, the shirtless fellow in the horned fur helmet and painted face, the QAnon Shaman has been arrested and his mother begged that her boy be fed organic food otherwise he would get physically sick. Oh, no. We can’t have him getting sick.

There are conflicting reports as to whether or not he has been granted his request for organic food.

*Censored? That is a microphone you are speaking into on live television, isn’t it? What a dumbass.*

And then there’s Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. She’s just been elected as a US Representative of Georgia, and she’s a QAnon supporter. Her first order of business after voting against the impeachment of the riot-inciter-in-chief is to introduce articles of impeachment against Joe Biden the day after he takes the oath of office. Attagirl! Feel the crazy flow through you!

A Dimland Radio Pedantic Moment: QI, 17 Year Olds, And American Prisons

In the video clip (here) of interesting facts about America, QI host Stephen Frye says there are more 17 year old black people in prison than in college. I don’t know how the education system goes in the UK where this show comes from, but in America most kids start college at 18 years of age.

Sure, there are some who start younger, but that’s a small percentage. I wonder if there are more 18 year old black people in prison than in college in America.

Still, the numbers he gives are shameful.

It’s Not True: Kamala Harris Quote

Something that is so predictable about social media, because it is a constant problem, is the sharing of supposed quotes from politicians. People continue to share meme that are pictures of famous people with a quote. And people just assume the memes are true.

Well, this one ain’t true.

Kamala Harris never said that.

And, in the interest of fairness, I ran through a list of claims about Fearless Loser that aren’t true. I’m sure some people will raise an eyebrow, but I calls ’em as I sees ’em.

The Bonus Army

One Trumper friend of mine tried to counter the claim that the US Capitol building hadn’t been attacked since 1814, as part of the War of 1812. He attempted an “Oh, yeah! what about 1932?” gotcha. However, the event to which he referred wasn’t an attack on the Capitol. It was a protest.

It was the Bonus Army. This “army” was made up of thousands of WW1 veterans who had been hard hit by the Great Depression. The American government had granted the veterans a “bonus” to be paid to them in 1945, however the veterans needed the money desperately in 1932. They went to Washington DC to protest to get that money immediately.

There was no storming of the Capitol. No Congressman was threatened with kidnapping or death. The only violence came when the government went to clear out the tent city the Bonus Army had built and occupied during their protest. Two were killed by police.

It’s A New Year, But With 2020’s Same Old Shit

I take two weeks off and the world continues to go to hell. I shouldn’t be surprised. After all, Fearless Loser is still president and determined to watch the world burn.

There’s a very common question skeptics get: What’s the harm?

What’s the harm if someone believes in bigfoot, ghosts, UFOs, angels, etc?

The harm is that believing in seemingly harmless things sets the bar for evidence very low. With a low bar, people can begin to believe any wild claim. They haven’t developed the critical thinking skills to protect themselves from scams, fantasy, and conspiracy theories.

What we saw on Wednesday was conspiracy theorists whose threshold for evidence is so low they believed the insane bullshit peddled by dangerous internet trolls (such as QAnon), right wing media, the president, and his fellow coup attempters. Fearless Loser has based his whole political career on mongering conspiracies. I don’t know whether he believes them or not, but that doesn’t matter. His staunchest supporters do. And on Wednesday, he, Fearless Loser Jr., and Rudy Guliani got a crowd of “peaceful” protestors ginned up to “peacefully” march to the Capitol, where a joint session of Congress was certifying the Electoral College vote for Joe Biden, and then “peacefully” push past the barricades and police to “peacefully” storm the seat of American government.

Was that Fearless Loser’s intent? I think it was. What else did he think would happen?

He started his political career pushing the conspiracy theory of Birtherism (Obama was born in Kenya) and established his base. A base of people who can’t tell good evidence from bad, reality from twisted fantasy. He then went on to lie to his base through his campaign and his entire presidency. In the last several months he set up that base to believe that if he lost reelection it would be because it was rigged. Then when he did lose, he spent two months lying about widespread voter fraud, vote-flipping, dead people voting, massive dumps in the middle of the night (or was that him referring to what he was doing while tweeting?), etc. He invited his base to come to DC on January 6th for a “wild” time. They came, he lied to them, and they went wild.

Impeach this man, the worst president in American history, again!

In the direct attack on American democracy, five people lost their lives. One of them was a police officer. So much for blue lives mattering. One was a rioter who was former military. She was shot trying to climb in through a door that had been busted open. The other three deaths were rioters who suffered heart attack, stroke, or some other medical emergency. (Four people were killed in Benghazi and Republicans were enraged. In Benghazi, the four died from an attack by outsiders on our American embassy in Libya. These five died in an insurrection attempt by Americans attacking their own country. How enraged do Republicans seem about that?) If BLM protestors had attacked the Capitol there would be far more than five people killed.

Believing the conspiracy monger-in-chief’s lies is the harm.

A Dimland Pedantic Moment: Does It Really Mean Exactly The Same Thing?

On the most recent episode of George Hrab’s Geologic Podcast, in his Facts That Will Fuck You Up segment he said the road warning “Bridge May Be Icy” means the exact same thing as “Bridge May Not Be Icy.” But, this pedant asked, “Hmmm. Does it?”

Taking A Break

With Holiday upon us, I decided I would take a break from the show. So, there will be no new show for the next two weeks. Dimland Radio will return January 9, 2021.

I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream For Licorice Ice Cream

Well, I scream for licorice ice cream. Not everyone appreciates the wonderfulness of the licorice flavor, but it’s been a favorite of mine since I was a kid. And in those days my source for that delectable treat was Bridgeman’s Restaurant and Ice Cream Parlor.

Sadly, decades ago, the local Bridgeman’s closed down and my favorite ice cream became impossible to find. I looked from time to time over the years and found similar items, but they were either fleetingly available or had some distance to travel and planning involved.

This past week, while at the Mom & Pop grocery store near my work, look at what I found!

Honey, He Followed Me Home! Can I Keep Him?

He wandered into the comic book store at which I work. He looked so sad and lonely as he stood there. I kept looking at him and my heart was breaking. I knew he needed a good home and I knew just the place.

I worked out a deal with the boss. We came to a price that we could both agree on and into the car my new friend went. (The price turned out to be nothing, because the owner decided to make this little fella my year-end bonus.)

It was then that I figured I should ask my wife if I could bring home an addition to our family. “I’ll take care of him. Feed him, walk him, clean up after him. Please, please, please!”

She said no.

Then I explained to her the concept of a fait accompli.

And now he has his own spot in my art studio at home. Right next to my special globe and the remains of a previous little fella that I brought home. I’m sure my new friend will fair better than that other one did.

A Republican Who Accepts Reality

He was early in his acceptance of Fearless Loser’s election defeat. He kept asking to see evidence of widespread voter fraud and the Trump campaign never offered any. All they did was cry fraud to the public, but then they sang a different tune in the courts. And the courts shot down every challenge, but one.

This Republican has also begun to plead with anti-maskers to mask up in order to save lives during this pandemic. He had the Covid and he knows how important it is to stay safe. He had been following the guidelines for months but he let his guard down for four days and he ended up in the ICU.

He is the former governor of New Jersey Chris Christie. He deserves some kudos for being on the right side of history with regard to the pandemic and the overwhelming repudiation of Pres. Trump by the American voters.

The Beginning Of The End Of The Pandemic In America

We still need to mask up, keep our distance, wash our hands, and stay home as much as possible, but Pfizer’s vaccine for COVID-19 has begun to be administered. Front line health workers are first and Vice Pres. Pence has jumped the line (he would have been second to last if I was scheduling the vaccine rollout) to get his. It will take time for the rest of us, but the end is in sight.

Still, be smart and stay safe!

The Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon

There is a podcast called Omnibus! which is hosted be Ken Jennings (Jeopardy! grand champion) and John Roderick (The Long Winters) and drops twice a week. It’s a history podcast of sorts and recently they talked about the Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon or as it as is more scientifically known the frequency illusion.

The coining of the term Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon predates the term frequency illusion and it made its first public appearance in the pages of the St. Paul Pioneer Press in the mid-90s. The section it first appeared in is known as the Bulletin Board, a feature for regular folks to contribute stories, jokes, photos, memories, observations, and complaints. The Bulletin Board is that series of conversations one hears at gatherings of friends and family. I was a frequent contributor back in the day and I remember when Gigetto On Lincoln (a fellow BB contributor) introduced us to the phenomenon.

I Mean, Can We Stop Saying Penultimate?

I’ve been hearing a couple things over and over lately. One is the word “penultimate” and the other is the phrase “I mean.”

Penultimate means next to last or second to last. And over the past couple of years I’ve been hearing more and more podcast hosts using the word. A YouTuber used t just recently when reviewing Paul McCartney’s new album and I’ve been hearing it elsewhere, even the boss said it the other day. I think we should give it a rest.

And younger folks keep starting their answers to any question asking their opinion with the phrase, “I mean…” That really has to stop! I mean, it’s just getting out of hand.
