‘Tis The Season

I hope my listener had a great Thanksgiving and is getting psyched for the rest of the holiday season. I am. Pretty much.
I put the tree up and put out all the usual Christmas decorations. I do this by myself, which is fine, really. I put the tree on the porch and, honestly, there isn’t much room for more than one decorator. Another person on the porch, putting ornaments in the wrong place, would rile me up too much, so sleep in, you sleepyheads!

The sleepyheads in this case are Amy (my wife) and Hayden (our son). Hayden is up from college in Mankato this weekend. It sure is nice to see him, when he comes out of his room to go to raid the refrigerator. Ahhhh, the joys of parenthood.
And he did that thing kids returning from college for a few days often do. He brought his dirty laundry. Ahhhh, even more joys of parenthood.
Tread
We did manage to wrangle an evening out of Hayden. He consented to watching a documentary on the Netflix with the old folks.
Tread, released in 2020, documents the slow descent into madness of Marv Heemeyer, who believed the officials of the small Colorado town of Granby were conspiring against him. During his descent, Heemeyer had acquired a large bulldozer. He did attempt to sell it, but no one was interested.
With the town out to get him and having this piece of heavy equipment on his hands, what was Mr. Heemeyer to do?
Well, while have a schvitz in his hot tub, God told him what to do.

You know, that God fellow is a real asshole. It’s a good thing I don’t believe in Him.
All Of Us

The NIH is sponsoring a major medical research program. The program is called All Of Us and it wants to get at least a million Americans on board. They expect the program to last ten years and to collect a massive database of medical information that can help determine how people get sick or stay healthy, how environment affects their health, etc.
If you’re an American, you can sign up to be part of the program. You will answer surveys, give background information on yourself and your family, and, if you want to, you can give All Of Us access to your medical records (your privacy will be protected) and you can give them a sample of your DNA.
What do you get in return? If you do give a blood and urine sample for DNA processing, you will get a $25 gift card to Target. You, if you want it, can also learn your ancestry and find out if you might be at risk for any disease. And you get the satisfaction of helping to advance medical science.

While I discussed the All Of Us program, I mentioned that my BMI has me listed as overweight. That may be correct, but BMI does have some problems. BMI means ‘body mass index’ and it’s a quick way to figure out if someone is underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese.
As I said, it has problems. It doesn’t take into account that muscle weighs about 18% more than fat, a person’s age, race, lifestyle. It’s sort of a one size fits all fat tester. It’s not always accurate. After all, superstar quarterback Tom Brady’s BMI shows him to be obese.
BMI isn’t completely useless. It can provide a quick guide to a person’s amount of body fat, but it shouldn’t be the only guide used. When it indicates someone is overweight, the healthcare provider needs to do more accurate testing to confirm.
A Dimland Radio Pedantic Moment: BOGO

Buy one, get one? Well, you’re goddamn right if I buy one, I get one. I mean, I bought that one. I better get it. That’s the deal. When you buy something, you get it. So, right. Buy one, get one.
Now, I know Buy One, Get One means either you buy one and get a second one for free or maybe half price. I know that. It’s shortened for ease of phrasing, to fit better on point of purchase signs, and for the nifty BOGO abbreviation.
But, I wanted to make a joke. Sue me.
Movie Recommendation: The French Dispatch (2021)

I didn’t even know Wes Anderson had a new film in the theaters when my wife and son said they wanted to go see it for my birthday.
That’s funny. I would have thought that, since it was MY birthday, I would get to choose the movie to be seen.
No matter, I, too, am a fan of Anderson’s films. I haven’t seen them all. Yet. But I have seen several and I really like them. They have a quirkiness to them that I like. The characters are offbeat and yet they are also pretty deadpan. And the films are funny.
Anderson also uses meticulous art direction. Every shot, every set, every scene are deliberately planned out. His films are just delightful to look at.
I recommend you check out The French Dispatch.
