dimland radio 11-9-24 show notes

Yes, there was very, very, very, very, very, very, very, bad news last Tuesday and we are all in for a rough four years. I’ll talk about that next week.

This week, I was determined to finish the epic tale on my wife’s and my big trip.

Scarred building.
Dancing during lunch? What is this? Wisconsin?
On our carriage ride through Killarney Park.
Jessica, the horse who pulled the carriage.

Another location used in one of the Harry Potter movies.

Cool panoramic view, eh?
The cave used in Harry Potter & the Half-Blood Prince.
A bracing day.
Matt, Marianne, Katrina, Randy, Jo, Carl, Corby, Wendy, and us.
Yes, it’s a unisex restroom. Yes, I used it.

Now, on to Galway!

An ancient wall is a shopping mall? Why yes, it is. And the young bearded lad and the woman in blue are Owen and his mother Susan.
The house that caught fire with a baby trapped inside.
Below the crest is a sculpture of the monkey holding the baby it rescued from the fire.
Liam, our guide through Galway at The Kings Head.
Amy and I having a pint at The King’s Head.
A musician busking near our hotel. Amy and I were rather taken with her.

The next day, we parted ways from the group and traveled onto to Sligo with our driver/guide Deirdre.

There’s Deirdre.
That’s the very expensive Ashford Castle Hotel.
On the way to Sligo, we stopped to feed some sheep. Amy didn’t have any food…
…But I did.
Kylemore Abbey
The ruins of Cong Abbey
Some very green grass at Cong Abbey.
Moments after posing for this picture, my emotions got the better of me. I shed a few tears thinking of my recently departed father,

That evening we arrived at Sligo, but Sligo itself was merely a place for us to get a good night’s sleep before traveling onto Belfast in Northern Ireland the next day.

That’s Aiden, our driver to Belfast. He and I bonded over a song by Irish band The Undertones. The song: My Prefect Cousin
Drumcliffe Church
WB Yeats’ grave at Drumcliffe Church.
Amy and Me and Glencar Waterfall.
Belfast. A city still living in the shadow of The Troubles.
Belfast Castle
The Belfast Castle garden filled with nine representations of cats. Could we find them all?
Carrickfergus Castle
King William III (or William of Orange). He and I have our birthdays on November 14th. Astrologers, put your charts away.
The very interesting architecture Belfast’s Titanic Museum. We didn’t tour the museum, other than its gift shop and restrooms.
That’s us by the big Titanic sign.

This is where the trip got pretty having as we learned about people killed during The Troubles, the uneasy peace, the sectarian nature of Belfast, and our driver/guide Kieran’s involvement of the side of the IRA.

That’s one of the gates the closes each night separating the Protestants and Catholics. There may be peace, but it’s still very tense.
At the memorial to the Clonard Martyrs.
“Non-lethal” bullets. The one on the right is the bullet that struck Kieran. Had t not hit a car before hitting him, he probably would have been killed.
There is Kieran telling us about the “peace” wall. It’s a wall that has accumulated many, many signatures…
…including ours. Under the word Peace under the DK.
We took Kieran’s advice and stopped at The Crown Bar for a pint.
Inside The Crown Bar, which may have been a location during the filming of Odd Man Out.
Yes, we had a pint at The Crown Bar.
Kelly’s Cellars bar, established 1720.
Beef and potato stew and my last pint of the trip. Later this day, Amy and I would be flying to Amsterdam for a night’s stay in a hotel by the airport and then a long flight home. That was the plan anyway.
This was the only attraction we got to see in Amsterdam. Unless you count the airport, which I don’t.

Yes, we flew into Amsterdam and arrived at our hotel at about 9:30 at night. Due to the late hour and our hotel being well away from any kind of Amsterdam tour sites, we got some rest in preparation of our long flight home. However, I got about 30 minutes of sleep.

The next day we got on our plane and waited and waited to take off. There was some problem that needed fixing. The problem had been fixed (or had it) when we had to waited for a new flight crew.

The crew got changed out, pre-flight procedures completed, and we took off. Yay!

But the landing gear would not retract, so back to the airport. The flight was canceled, so we had to get booked on another one flying out the next day and get booked into another hotel. That took the rest of the day and we didn’t get to the new hotel until late.

Flight cancelled. Waiting to re-book and go to another hotel.

Sure, we got another night in Amsterdam, but no time to site see. So, it was off to bed with us. I did sleep better than the night before. I was exhausted.

The next day, we got on another plane and it took off pretty much on time and there were no problems. Yay!

And there was one more surprise of awesomeness for us before getting home.

We were a couple hours into the flight, when passengers on the opposite side of the plane from us were all gathering to look out the widow. Curious, I investigated.

The source of the commotion was the fact they we were flying over Greenland (I misspoke on the show. I called it Iceland. It’s not. It’s Greenland).

Greenland!
Weary travelers happy to be home.

And, then, the next day, we drove down to me sister’s place and picked up our little Edna. Boy! Did we miss her!

There’s our little girl!

After I finally finished the story of the big trip, I had an announcement.

After giving the matter lots of thought and consideration, I decided to end the show. It’s been 14 years 8 months since I started my weekly show. That’s about one quarter of my life.

There will be a show next week, so you will get one last bout of my prattling on and on.

I will see you next week. One last time.
