dimland radio 10-26-24 show notes

Funny. I don’t remember that guy standing behind us at the time. Hmmm.

As I did at the beginning of last week’s show, I backtracked a bit to talk about our visit to Mary King’s Close. It was a highlight in a trip filled with highlights, but somehow I forgot to talk about it when I talked about Edinburgh.

Very cool tour!
Ew! Creepy AI-generated image. How many fingers does that hand have?

While on our walking tour of Edinburgh, our guide mentioned the our hair and fingernails continue to grow after we die. This is an old myth.

When people die metabolism stops and they stop growing. Everything stops. Sure, it takes some time for all our cells to die, but they do long before hair or fingernails can do any additional post-death growing.

What happens is…

Oh, no. You gotta listen to the show. Or go here.

Not the Hogwart’s Express, but pretty close.
An old style passenger car for authenticity.
Yes, we rode over the same viaduct used in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Look closely at the left of the picture, on the hill above the viaduct. Those are a bunch of trainspotters gathered to watch our train go by. Lots of waving!
And that’s the location used for Dumblebore’s burial site (spoiler!), first seen in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

Leaving the Harry Potter stuff behind (for now), we continued making our way to Glasgow, but we had a few things to see on the way.

Our guide, Ian, who saw us through to Glasgow.
On the advice of Ian, Amy and I stopped here for a pizza and a pint.
Black Isle’s own Red Kite ale. The best pint of the entire trip. So good!
This bit of mountain range is called the Three Sisters.
And I finally found a Nessie rubber “duck”! I found it in Fort William, Scotland.
Our last stop in Scotland.
Our hotel in Glasgow.
That’s Emily, our guide for our walking tour of Glasgow.
Glasgow Cathedral
Stain-glass naughty bits!
The cemetery near Glasgow Cathedrel.
Oldest house in Glasgow. Built in 1471.
Nice room you got here. You ought to try living in Mary King’s Close!
One of the many murals around town.
Excellent!
Ladies and gentlemen, The Beatles!
Hey! How’d that traffic cone get up there?
Doulton Fountain. The largest water fountain made of terracotta in the world.
The Clydeside Distillery

For our last day of our tour in Glasgow, we visited The Clydeside Distillery. It was a very informative tour with a happy ending. Er, I mean, it was happy in that we got to sample some authentic Scotch whiskey at the end of the distillery tour.

I finished my samples.
After all the activities for the day were over, Amy and I stopped here for a bite to eat and a pint. It was ok.
And now we head to Ireland.

Goodbye to you, Scotland. Thank you!

Next week the tales of our trip continues. We’ll still be in Ireland (finally). Let’s see if I get it all done next week. Tune in!
